Tuckers diarrhea is returning
 
Tucker is gonna have to go back monday to the vet, he's having liquid bm's 2x a day again. I don't understand why the frequency a day isn't more. She's gonna have to retest the stool. I'll keep you all posted.

Please get in touch with Manolos mom or maybe jodi can direct her here as they are friends - My gut is still this may be like her dog and fungal due to compost triggering this digestive upset and dogs that have alot of diarrhea can have low cholesterol, low protein and low calcium as all tied together -- I could be way off base but it all sounds so familiar to what manolosmom went through and her dog was sick from eating potting soil I believe in her yard.

Do you know if anything fungal is in that compost?

also was anything else off on that blood panel besides Calcium

there is a very comprehensive fecal that you can do as i paid for it for my dd when she was having diarrhea and it was not cheap. It was $200 here in california may be cheaper there but it covers EVERYTHING - very very thorough so I would get that done as well. I think it was sent to antech so let me see as antech order form is online i believe

ok it was idexx lab I just pulled it out and it is called Canine Diarrhea Panel Comprehensive. It is a 4 page extensive report

The very first labs that were drawn, had low protein, which she said could be from the diarrhea, then the very low calcium which was her major concern, pancreatic enzymes were a little up, and WBC were very elevated. And nothing to be found in the urine. I have to work early tomorow, so maybe after work I'll try and find that person you said had similiar doggy issues. I have a feeling you are right about the fungal, or maybe the flagyl wasn't strong enough, she said he had multiple things flying around in his stool specimen. My poor boy..

I'll run that by the vet, I am sure she'll do it, also I want to ask about hooking him up to some IV fluids while I'm there, I think that would at least make him feel better. Thanks for the info. on that canine panel.

wbc is infection and the pancreatic enzyme you mean the lipase was elevated? If she does another blood draw have her do the TLI as this measures for epi only as spec cpli measures for pancreatitis but TLI measures for epi which is something that runs in this breed - I think i linked to that below will double check.

I still think fungal though if the metronidazole did not stop it then it is not bacteria and could be fungal.

Just throwing my thoughts out there

ok epi dogs are anorexic as they eat but lose weight but they lose protein and tli will determine this or rule it out- It is found in dogs that get chronic pancreatitis over time they can develop this

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in Dogs (EPI)

lymphangiectasia is usually when a dog has ibd for years but it can be onset of diarrhea - low protein, low calcium, low cholesterol show up on blood work

Lymphangiectasia

PLE is another thing that runs in the breed - low protein

Protein Losing Enteropathy in Dogs (PLE)

and then i sent this link but this is what manolosmom's dog had but her dog had perfect blood work and why i posted the above due to things you stated were off on blood work that run in this breed

That epi thing you sent hits home as far as the symptoms. Oh God, I am gonna write all this down and give it to her. This isn't sounding any better, I think I am hoping for fungal.

do not stress as I know a few people that have dealt with epi ad ple and once on the right diet and supplements they are fine so do not panic. I just want you to ask more questions and make sure all of these are ruled out and no steroids until they make sure that histoplasmosis is ruled out as that can make the dog worse if they treat with steroids which is what happened to manolosmom. They did endoscopy to determine it was fungal not lymphangiectasia so the steroids were actually making her dog worse and fungal infection got worse after steroid use. They will use steroids for ibd dogs and lymphangiectasia dogs but they need to endoscopy before any drugs are given as if it is not that then it can cause a huge problem if it is fungal and why narrowing down what is going on and when it all started is key. Sounds like when it all started was when your dog ate that compost as your dog was fine before that correct?

Just like to say I hope your vet finds out whats going on with your little man.
I looked in on this thread because of the title, my mom has hyperparathyroidism and until this wasn't aware dogs could get it too. We almost lost my mom to this two x-masses ago, its a worrying condition but controlable. Must say I never thought I'd be learning anything about it on a site for dog lovers.

correct, never really had any problems except medicines for his trachea issues. this just came on after the visit in the veggie garden. tonight I am gonna back track and write down all your ideas.

You are so welcome. I know how it feels almost lost my dog 4 years ago so have always tried to pay it forward to help others:) I hope it helps and your baby gets better real soon :)
