| well we have a dog with severe allergies (but she has not had seizures) -- home cooking has improved her quality of life and her symptoms. Good luck!

| dogs with allergies do not have seizures as have been dealing with it for 5 years Did you have bile acids done on your dog as hypoglycemia and liver issues go hand in hand How old is your dog? |

| I have no answer for your first question really. I do know that at least one liver compromised dog who always had seizures has a drastically reduced amount on homecooked and supplements. The pup can't be on dog food... Bladder stone production was also reduced and may have been eliminated. If a dog is seizing from a food allergy, I imagine taking that ingredient away by homecooking could stop them, but changing a commercial diet could also work. In Ellie's case, she can't have any commercial or rx diets at this time. She nutritionist thinks that we need to find something homecooked first before trying more rx foods. So in our case it started as a comfort thing and now it is a necessity. I will continue to do it for her even if it becomes unnecessary though. Generally speaking, unless we are talking about diseases where no commercial or rx food is available, homecooking is not necessary. I have found no studies showing that it is safer or better, but then studies probably arne't going to be done on this right now. I can only say homecooking is what I'm comfortable with and it comes down to safety.

| Certain foods/additives can trigger seizures in dogs with a low seizure threshold, as can other common household items. * Turkey (for some dogs) * Caffeine * Walnuts * Moldy cheese * Rosemary Oil * Saffron * Sage * Foods with Ethoxyquin, BHA or BHT * Treats with Ethoxyquin, BHA or BHT * Rawhide Treats * Pigs feet * MSG (sometimes called natural flavoring, smoke flavoring etc) * Changes in dietary chloride (salt) content (from a change in food, treats or water) for dogs on Potassium Bromide Seizure Triggers |
