| Hair/Skin problems! Hope is 8 months old and has had some skin/hair problems her whole life! When I got her at 16 weeks she had some dandruff on her back and legs, but that has since all cleared up...with changes in food and shampoo. Now we have a new problem--- Above her left eye she has scratched it so much it is bald and looks raspberried. The hair on top of her head is also thinning out quite a bit, and even slightly balding in places. I keep her hair in a ponytail everyday. But she scratches it out often. I use bands for babies that don't pull or break hair (so they say)...but I'm wondering now if I should just puppy cut her with no ponytail...but I reeeeeeeally love her ponytail! HELP US PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! :] |

| I don't have any advice, hopefully someone with experience will chime in soon. I just wanted to say your Hope is adorable. I hope you figure out what's wrong. Have you taken her in to the vet? I hope she gets better soon.

With skin and allergies i recommend working with a dermatologist. I will pull up my link of info on allergies as have been dealing with this with a dermatologist for 5 years now Last edited by dwerten; 05-31-2010 at 03:44 PM. | |

| here is a bunch of info i wrote on allergies scroll down to first post and work your way up http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post3147954 unfortunately our derm said environmental allergies are going to be bad this year too so if it is that and she is rubbing at her eyes then you definitely want to get her on something like zyrtech which has been working well with allergy dogs but i would strongly suggest working with a dermatologist as allergies start in dogs from 6 mos to 3 years and my girl started around 6 mos so this could very well be this since this breed tends to have poor immune systems but the derm will rule out food allergy and demodex first Last edited by dwerten; 05-31-2010 at 03:48 PM. |

| thanks guys! I live in a rather small town and am not really sure where to find a doggie dermatologist. As far as the picture that I posted...you're right. When we got her she had VERY sparse hair on her legs...but that has since been improving. Now her legs look much better, but her head (which was never an issue before) is the problem. I will try and get her still enough to get a good picture of the area above her eye. It is very small, but noticeable to me! She seems to only scratch when the hair is in a ponytail, which makes me think she just doesn't like it...is that possible? Will a dog scratch themselves to blood just because they don't like it?? Her vet seems non-bothered by it. He put her on a fish oil supplement and that's about it. He agreed with me on the food changes (we now feed her Wellness) and the change in shampoos. I also give her the coconut oil from the vendor on this site. I am VERY guilty of sharing table food...but I don't think this could be the problem. Sorry this got so long....wanted to cover as much as I could! Thanks guys for all the info!!! :] |

| oh wow that is bad. You need to put her in a cone and not let her rub her eyes at all on carpet - is she doing that? your vet is not bothered by that as that is BAD ugh. here is my dd eye from allergies but i think your girl is worse as she keeps rubbing it. You need to get her in and get some antibiotic ointment tomorrow asap as you do not want her scratching her eye and scratching cornea. She needs to be in a cone now - do you have one? DEE DEE ALLERGIES :: 2010-01006.jpg picture by dwerten - Photobucket what is she eating as this could be food allergy as well do not let her scratch that - do you have an er vet you can go to and get a cone? | She's not scratching at it now cause I took the ponytail out. She doesn't scratch it at all when the ponytail is not in. I will pick up a cone tomorrow...but tonight she seems completely unaffected by it because the ponytail is out. |

| i would trim the top knot then and let that heal up real well as you do not want her to get an infection and that is why you need to get her some ointment to heal that up. It will grow back that way you can figure out also what is going on. I would go to vet tomorrow and maybe they can do a scrape for demodex as well to rule that out just to be safe. |

| itching issues Hi, I have noticed a common factor here with these Yorkies they all appear to have the silvery lighter silkier blond hair. I have been looking through the threads relating to scratching and itching. My story began last week when I brought Lila home after her spay surgery she also had a benign mammary cyst removed as well. She came home and 2 days later she started to rub her chin on the carpet kept us up all night with scratching her ears body etc... I did not notice any fleas have never had any problems with food same food for 2yrs California Natural Lamb and Rice. The only thing I have done is changed her conditioner I bathed her before her spay. She is on Benedryl as the vet recommended. They really think this is unrelated to her surgery. She was picked up by me the same day 6 hrs later. I do not want to keep her on the benedryl for long it has been helping. I can try the tshirt that is an idea. I cannot bathe her for another week because of the incisions. I have not put the advantage multi on her yet for the season. My other 2 Yorkies have been treated so far. I dont know at this point if it will dissappear as quickly as it appeared or what. I just noticed that the Yorkies that have had skin issues are for the most part silky and blond. My cotton coat Yorkie has shown no signs. I am also trying to figure out if it could be a hyperthyroid issues. Thanks for any input in advance. Mandy Lila and Jack's mom |
