| neutering at 2 years old? Hi everyone! I have not posted here in a long time, although I check the site regularly and read your helpful posts. Today however I am faced with a serious dilemma and just had to post my question. I took my dog, Mickiey, to the vet today for his annual check up. The vet examined Mickiey and advised me to neuter him. Mickiey turned two years old in March and I am conflicted about whether this procedure is safe to do at his age. I did not want to neuter him up until now because I was hoping that he would father puppies. Unfortunately it did not happen, and I don't think that it will. Hence, I believe that it is best to neuter him because I heard that it will keep him in better health and will hopefully prolong his life span, but I do not know if it is good for him at this age. I know that most owners neuter their dogs by the age of 12 months, so would I be hurting him or causing his discomfort or harm by neutering him at 2 years old? Also, the vet said that many of Mickey's baby teeth did not fall out yet, so when he will be under anesthesia for the neutering process he can remove the baby teeth at once. Again, I do not feel comfortable doing unnecessary things to my dog, and am not sure that removing his baby teeth is necessary. What do you think? Is it bad or harmful to leave things the way they are? Or is removing his baby teeth better for him? Last year my dog had several health scares so we visited the vet very frequently, and I am not sure why the vet did not bring any of these issues up than. It would have been so much easier to do all of these procedures when Mickey was still around 1 year old, but unfortunately I was not informed. Anyhow, please let me know what you think about neutering a 2 year old Yorkie, and what I should do about his baby teeth. Thank you all in advance! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | It is perfectly safe to neuter at any age as long as the dog is healthy. If he hasn't had a blood panel done within the last 3 months i'd have one done before surgery just to be sure everything is in working order. this should be done no matter what the age is before a dog goes under anesthesia. Also the baby teeth definitely need to come out. If left in there for long they can cause a serious infection that can spread throughout the bloodstream and body. they can also rot and make his mouth smell horrible (if it doesn't already).

Neutering is safe as long as he is healthy (and it's still safe for a lot of dogs who aren't perfectly healthy). This is really owner preference. The teeth have to come out. They really have been left too long and this can lead to some very serious issues.

| I just had Nikki and Peanut both neutered within the last few months and they are both 2. Peanut had to have 3 teeth removed and was chriptorchid...Nikki was a regular neuter. Both boys did just fine and it has all but stopped their marking in the house. As long as your boy is healthy there is nothing to be worried about having a neuter done at the age of 2. |

| Thank you Kalina for the quick reply! I brush his teeth regularly so his breath doesn't bother me much. However I do want to do what's best for him. I always had big dogs, and was never the sole caretaker (my parents were) so I really didn't know that removing the baby teeth is crucial, but the more and more I read about this, the more I realize that it needs to be done. Thank you again for the reply. |

| Wow! Thank God for this forum, you all are so quick to help!! It seems that the removing of teeth is really a unanimous decision among yorkie mommies, and I think I shall do it as well. My biggest concern was doing these procedures at 2 years of age when most dog owners do it much earlier, but it seems like there are no risks involved. I will certainly have his blood checked prior to going through with it. Thank you for sharing your experiences and advise. It is really much appreciated!!! |

Don't forget to look at the anesthesia protocol in the YT Library. Not all anesthesias are equal and some vets do a much better job with sugerical protocol than others.

i agree that you should check the http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html thread to read up about what you need to ask your vet before surgery.

| Thank you again ladies.. I will check out the anesthesia protocol right away. I find my vet to be very good so thankfully I am confident with him doing the procedure. He did give me a print out of what the treatment plan would be, and one of the things listed is "alter dog 1-24 Ibs". Does anyone know what this is? I want to make sure that there are no unnecessary vaccines and/or injections. Mickiey is very sensitive, and I don't want him having any unnecessary medications. Ellie May, I'm sorry that Ellie had to experience those dental problems..I hope that she is okay now. Again, thank you to everyone I appreciate your help!!! |

it is probably just the code for the procedure. Alter (neuter) dogs from 1 to 24 lbs. estimates for surgery as done by weight and time for anesthesia so they know what to charge.

| My neighbors adopted a 6 year old dog, half Boxer half Mastiff. Very big! They got him from a woman that was giving him up after rescuing him from the pound. She said that she was moving to a place that was too small and that was why he needed another home, but as my neighbors found out, he was REALLY a handful. They had him neutered, even though he was already 6 years old. It made all of the difference in the world. He is such a laid-back, cool dog now! The previous owner comes to visit him at least once a month, and she can't get over how much he changed. So, yes, you can neuter at the age of two, and even much older, if the dog is healthy.

| Yes, it is on the estimate.. just wanted to make sure that it wasn't another vaccine or anything like that. So just wanted to thank everyone for the advice one last time, and let you know that I made my final decision and will be taking Mickiey in for the removing of teeth and neutering. Your replies helped me a great deal in making my decision, and I believe that this is best for my dog. Thank you! |
