While some people think that GME is caused by vaccinations, there is no research that indicates this is true. If dogs were not vaccinated, we would have very, very sick dogs with all sorts of horrible illnesses.
It is similar to the controversy that surrounds vaccines and children and autism.
I am SO sorry this is happening to Polo. I hope that if this is what he has, he will respond to treatments. There is chemo that can help.

Having a son with autism... I know that this theory has been debunked yrs ago. The connection and concern was that toddlers given the last set of MMR shots, would shortly after lose talking abilites. Suddenly unable to respond . This was a huge debate. Scientists now have taken the stand that one does not have anything to due with the other.
As far as dog vaccines , I only gave my 2 their puppy shots including rabies, Thankfully no serious adverse reactions. They are both in need for rabies vaccine though. I am taking them for it on Saturday. That way I can get their city liesence on monday .
If i were to give them anymore vaccines, I would opt for the titer testing first.

I had a 3.5 lb Yorkie who had encephalitis and was treated by a neurologist in Jackson, FL. She lived for 6 more years, however, I think all of the medication that it took to save he caused the renal failure that she died from at the age of 12 years old.

Just updating this thread. After listening to an interview with Dr. Schultz, I'm leaning toward going back to titering. However, if I do I won't be relying on the lab's reference numbers to revaccinate or not. I will go with what he thinks.

This isn't for everybody and it's always best to talk to your vet about it. But I know I said I don't like titers much and my opinion is changing. I just don't think the values that the labs think are protective is completely correct.

I am one of those parents that has an autistic son who still believes that MMR (before they removed the mercury) shot caused my son to lose everything. Shortly after he received that shot, he lost all cognitive and social skills.....:thumbdown

Wow, what a great thread! Glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks vaccination shots can be dangerous. I have 2 beautiful yorkie boys and they stopped getting shots after few years old due to "not so good" experience w/ them when they were little boys.

I think it's all up to the parents to decide what is good/best but if you break down to the science and do a research on what really vaccinations contain, how could one person say it is a "good" thing?

If you read the research, you will find that actually vaccines in people and animals are a good thing. I shudder to think of the epidemics we would have without them.
Further, we would have a lot more dog deaths from illness.
I do think that over vaccination is an issue, but a blanket statement that they are not good is not accurate.

I haven't read all of the posts on this thread as it will take me awhile to do so but Lucy was overdue with her Dhpp so we decided to have it done today. We live in a rural area where there is a lot of wildlife and little creatures around, Lucy goes out on a leash only as we do not have a fenced in yard but I don't want to take any chances on the distemper for sure.
As a kid I grew up on a farm and people had a lot of barn cats and I saw a lot of distemper and it broke my heart because farmers don't do much about it and it spreads from farm to farm as the cats roam all over.
We are not on a farm but as I said we are close to wildlife and there are a lot of critters; skunks, gophers, squirrels, etc. and you never know.....

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. I know that it is recommended that vaccinations should be done separately. Neo is due for his rabies and DHPP shots in July. He wasn't given the "3 year shot" because my vet supposedly didn't have/didn't know to give it. This year he will get it. Connor will get his, too. I hate to, but it is the law here, especially because there has been a rabies outbreak in my county, in a town nearby. My question is: is there anything preventing me from getting the rabies shot first and the DHPP the following month? I'm asking because this time of year here makes me nervous, and I want to be up on shots for evacuation/emergency purposes. You just never know about hurricane season here!:eek:

Doesn't matter. Waiting a month between the two may be recommended on YT, but that is quite a span of time. It may be best to wait as long as possible, but if you need things up to do for the coming season, you do not need to wait that long.
