My yorkie won't eat in her bowl. Does anyone have this problem? she won't eat when it's in her bowl. She only eat it when it's in my hand or on her bed, or anywhere else but the bowl. She barely eat it from the bowl. She kept putting her head in and out of the bowl, but won't eat it from there. What should I do?:( |

Welcome to YT!! How old is your furbaby. Trixie would only eat off the floor when she first came home from the breeder at about 12 weeks. I would put kibble on the floor and leave some in her bowl. Little by little, she started getting the idea that the kibble in the bowl was the same as on the floor....now she eats out of her bowl. :animal-pa BTW...my friend's goldendoodle did the same thing when she first got her from the breeder. |

My baby is 12 weeks. Will she get use to eating on the floor if this continue? |

I have had three Yorkies and none of them ate out of their bowls! I do believe it is some "Yorkie quirk". I just put her food, wet or dry, on a plastic mat and she is quite happy with that method. So don't feel like your baby is alone in her odd habit!:aimeeyork |

 How old is yours? |

Rhett went through this for a few days. And I was quite happy to oblige at first. My poor husband just rolled his eyes at me feeding him off a spoon. I finally put some extra 'goodies' in his bowl and that was enough to entice him in to thinking the bowl was a great thing. |

Gabriella is 6 months old, she was 3 1/2 mos. when I got her from the Breeder. The breeder told me not to waste a lot of money on cute bowls for her. " Most yorkies won't eat from them, or they need to be very low or shallow dishes." Seems to be the case for my little darlin'!:aimeeyork |

Remy will not eat from a bowl either He eats from plates I have a set of dishes just for him :) |

I think its a small dog issue. I have a Jack Russell as well as a new Yorkie. They both remove a few pieces of food and eat it a few feet away from the bowl one piece at a time. Some times I'll see my JR get 3 pieces eat two and wait for my Yorkie to eat the third before she goes back for more. |

She doesn't eat unless I feed her with my hands =[ I don't have her to starve. |

eating from bowl Miss Bella won't eat out of her bowl she would rather eat out of everyone's else s But she will eat out of a plate if you put it down. then there is Jack. He will eat on a plate and then go outside where the others are eating and pick out of there also. Mind you everyone has the same in there bowls as his but that's the way mine are. my chloe use to do that, but i would just leave the bowl there until she ate it ! |

Out of my three (two yorkies, one chihuahua), Addie, our first yorkie, wouldn't eat out of a bowl. I had to hand feed her for awhile. I started mixing her dry food with a bit of wet food and she started eating out of her bowl. I would handfeed and gradually get my hand closer to the bowl until she just started taking pieces out on her own. I did get the cute little bowls. :) Just make sure they have a low rim. Like someone else said, having a set of dishes for your little one will work too. I know people who feed their babies off of plates, one of the pups (not a yorkie) is 20 plus pounds and he won't eat out of a bowl. It does seem yorkies naturally prefer to be handfed. :) Addie was probably about 7-8 months old before she started eating out of a bowl on a regular basis. She still insists on taking out some of the food and eating it off the carpet though. |

If I continnue to hand feed her will she get use to that? |

Yes she will, like my friends yorkie she has to feed him on a spoon cause she got him used to it |

Beside mixing the food, what else can i do to make her eat from the bowl? |

I have 3 yorkies, Tessie 14 months, Hobbes 13 months and Calvin 7 months. They won't eat out of bowls but they have a area rug I put their food on for them to eat. Calvin is still on puppy food so I sit with them so he won't eat the adult food. Sometimes I have to hand feed one because they get stubborn but they always eat. It was too hard for them to get the food out of bowls. |

Hi! My Madi is 10 years old and as a 12 week old puppy, since then I have to eat supper with her and we eat at the same time or she won't eat at all. Madi wouldn't eat off of anything but a big paper plate. I hope this helps! Thanks, Becky Irons |

Yes, you are much better off to let her eat from the floor/mat, low plate, etc. I was feeding from a spoon and my hand until I realized I could be doing this forever! They will get hungry enough and will eat from whatever is there. I did switch to a high-grade canned food (no wheat or grains) and she loves it! Eats it right away instead picking at it for 20 minutes or so! I just leave a few pieces of kibble for her crunch at will. I also use an all natural dental spray to keep her teeth from developing plaque since she eats mostly soft food. She loves it and it is very easy use. If anyone is interested, it is "Denta Sure" and you can Google it on-line to order. There is another brand that is less expensive, but it contains alcohol and Denta Sure does not. No one said these little babies were low maintenance...but so worth the effort! |

Thank you to you all. How many day can they handle without eating? |

I have read on here many times about this. My baby does the same as many other dogs on here. She will take her food from the dish (she has a dish rather than a bowl) and carries it to the carpet and eats it there.:D |

Haha..and here I thought Dakota was just a funny eater! :) Dakota didn't want to eat when I first brought her home..unless it was by hand. I had picked out these cute little bowls..but she wouldn't eat out of them, didn't even want to drink out of them! My vet said it was better to use something like a cat food dish..something shallow. Dakota eventually ate from the shallow ones, but it took her a little while, she would always take the food out of the bowl and eat it off the mat. She eats good most of the time now...but she still take a few pieces out to start off with and eats them off the carpet. :D |

Mine too Both Jack/Bella want there food on the carpet first. then they will eat out of the bowl. they are so funny:) Cheryl |

Wow, is this like a yorkie thing? |

Zoey was the same way a month ago when I got her (3-3.5 months old). She would only would eat from my hand and only would take her kibble or chicken out of her bowl and then she would run to her bed and eat it there. What has worked pretty good for Zoey is the following: When I put her food down I pretend to eat from the bowl. It's silly I know, but it works. I pick up the kibble in my hand while I'm squating down next to the bowl and I pretend to eat it and I put my face down to the bowl and say out loud MMMMM...Yum Yums. Well Zoey comes running over and now eats from her bowl when I do that. She practically pushes me out of the way to get to her bowl to eat. I think she thinks I'm eating her food and she better get it and eat it before I do. :) |

I bought cat bowls from Walmart for less than $2 each. They are flat almost like a saucer. Since we do not feed very much there really is not a need for a big bowl. Also, dogs eat by smell~try sprinkling a little Parmesan Cheese on the food to get her to eat. Avoid hand feeding it will create bad habits "which are hard to break". ;) |

no bowl here My 6 month old male yorkie will also not eat from a bowl, he does like a flat dish or the floor. He also circles the food a few times before he actually eats it if he eats at all. I do get worried because he has had bouts of hypoglycemia.. I try to give him honey or a little peanut butter between meals if he hasn't eaten in the morning..:animal36 |
