Should 1st Rabies vacc and kennel cough be given at same time? My vet has been very good about splitting up all of Rocco's vacc's since he had a bad reaction the first time (DHP w/ lepto:eek:). He received his last DHP booster 1 week ago (no problems) and all that is left is rabies and kennel cough, which the vet assured me is ok to do together...?? Rocco's appointment is today, and I'm very nervous about both of these vaccinations. Any input would be greatly appreciated to calm Mom's nerves (or modify my appointment before 5pm, if necessary)... |
I am no expert but if it makes you feel better, get the shots seperately. My vet deals with alot of Yorkies and will give shots that way. Btw, Lepco should never be given to a Yorkie! |
Thanks. I only wish I/he had known about the lepto. He did recover in about 8-12 hours, but do you think there could have been any permanent damage done? He was vomiting, had diarhhea, and was limp within about 10 minutes of the shot. I gave him Children's benadryl immediately and he slept for about 6 hours straight. Quote:

Rabies should be given alone. Especially in a kiddo who has prev. had a vax reaction. Are they going to pre-medicate him? I would ask for this. Does he have to get the KC bc of grooming or dog parks? Since this is non-core, I wouldn't get it unless absolutely necessary - again, esp. bc he has previously reacted to vaccines. |
In a dog that had a reaction, you should split them up and I would only do CORE vaccines as Wylie's Mom has already stated. As for lepto - the AAHA recommendation is that "routine vaccination of toy breeds should only be considered in dogs known to have high exposure risk" So unless you have a hunting yorkie, or a yorkie who likes to go in and out of streams/lakes that might contain the urine of infected animals, your yorkie DOES NOT NEED LEPTO. If your vet pushes you on this, drop the vet. Then turn the tables and ask your vet why he/she is pushing you on a noncore vaccine that isn't warranted in a toy breed and tell them to stick their advice where the sun don't shine. Sorry, I've been there and done this with these vets - and my friend just buried her 2.5 year old dog after a reaction to vaccines!! You might want to read it on the RIP thread as you ponder this topic. |
Thanks very much for the help. The kennel cough vacc will be necessary eventually for grooming and boarding, but not TODAY - I've just decided that. Also, the vet did not push the lepto on me, but administered it when I stated that Rocco spends a lot of time outdoors and I was surprised with how much he enjoys it being such a little guy. He included the lepto assuming he'd need it - I now know he never should have had it. I am staying on top of everything I can before giving him anything now...unfortunately, I'm petrified of the rabies shot and it's one of the mandatory vacc's. :( |
Lepto is just as bad as rabies in terms of reactions You also need to know that not all versions of the lepto bacteria found in the northeast will be covered by the vaccine. This fact really pissed me off when I found out. I gave lepto at one point - I do not do it now. As for bordatella and rabies - I've given them together in all three dogs, but we've never had a reaction. That's why I'd only give CORE and break them up if I did have a dog with a reaction. Good luck, glad you found YT before! Let us know how he does! |

I am sure you did not cause any damage. Two of my old goats are 10 and they've had the Lepto and they are fine. Just dont do it now that you know. Your vet can verify this info but here it is in a nutshell. Vaccination against Leptospira interrogans is only available for the serovars called canicola, grippotyphosa, pomona and icterohaemorragiae. (Some vaccines cover all four serovars while others cover only two out of four.) In RI, the lepto vaccine given to my dogs covered all 4. The vaccine does nothing to protect against the other strains of the bacteria. |

That is great! He probably reacted previously to the lepto. On the bordatella, I've always stayed with the intanasal version. That was another inconvenience for my prior vet (probably cheaper!). |
Also next week is too soon!!!!!!! Wait AT LEAST 2 weeks, longer if you can. Otherwise you might as well have given them together! |
This is a great thread. My girl is due for her rabies and last bordatella shot next week too. She has had no side affects from her shots, and they are planning on giving her both at the same time, but I think I may only do one at a time and the rabies first to be safe. :) Her vet and the vet's at the clinic I go to are amazing with amazing credentials and they also recommended the bordatella and they consider it a core vaccination. Why do some not consider the Bordatella vaccine to be a core and bad? I'm just curious. My girl will groomed in the future and maybe kenneled (if they need comes up), so I decided to get it. Roccosmommy - Happy to hear your little guy did great this time around and is doing fine. :) |

Bordatella is not a core vaccine so you might want to correct your vet. Bordatella is not "bad" but it is optional, and therefore it is NOT a core vaccine! |

She just considers it to be a very important one (like a core) and highly recommends it especially if you are going to have your dogs groomed or kenneled. ;) I guess my post above makes it seem like she said it was a core, which she didn't at all. :) Sorry about that. I'm curious as to why I hear others say though don't get it unless your REALLY need it! What are the side effects? Do some consider it to be dangerous? I'm not one that believes in over vaccinating at all, but I would take my vet's advice any day of the week! |
You wrote in your earlier post that your vet considered it to be a core, which is why I said that was not correct. I'm glad you'd take your vet's advice any day of the week. I don't take anyone's advice without my own independent research and judgment because they are MY YORKIES. I think the issue is that these toy breeds are being over vaccinated. Sometimes, it is a business decision by vets, and other times, they just are not knowledgeable about the breed. I personally do give my dogs bordatella. The one year we skipped it, we got kennel cough while shopping in petco. I take my dogs to obedience classes and out on walks. I choose to give the bordatella but it's the only non-core I give. |

Anyways, YES I trust my Vet and her amazing credentials and would take her advice any day of the week, but also like you do MY own research too on anything I have questions or concerns about because YES they are OUR babies and it gives you more of a piece of mind researching issues yourself as well. I consider myself very lucky to have such a wonderful vet with amazing credentials who also owns Yorkies too and understands the breed. :) The Bordatella is the only non-core my Vet recommends as well. :) My questions are though that I read so many people HIGHLY suggesting to NOT get it and was curious as to why they HIGHLY recommend not getting the Bordatella shot. Yes, the over-vaccinating thing can be a reason why they highly suggest not getting the Bordatella shot but I wanted to hear there thoughts on it as well and the reasons why they highly recommend not getting the shot. |

But, having had my friend just lose her 2 year old dog 2 nights ago from vaccines (you can read about Brandi on the RIP thread) I have started to re-think the way I do things in this area. The more you stay around YT, the more of this you'll hear, unfortunately. |
Oh I'm so sorry about your friend and her dog Brandi. I'll have to check out that thread! Yes, Zoey also got the nose drops, and not the shot. I don't remember exactly but someone else surely will, there's something about the shot that's not desirable, I think. My dog will eventually go out in public a lot and to the groomers, so I decided to have her get the Bordetella vaccine. I know Bordetella is very prevalant and contagious, although it takes more than slight contact to catch. The thing I personally don't like about it is that the vaccine doesn't give immunity fully for a year, so it needs to be repeated annually I read? So I totally understand someone not wanting to give all those shots if they don't have to. Do your dogs get the Bordatella vaccine yearly too? |

KC can lead to pneumonia, so in that way, giving it can protect against something serious. At the same time, it has the potential to cause KC, so... To each their own. :) There is a debate about the duration of immunity (which is nothing new in the world of vaccines). One studies showed 1 year and then I think the AAHA said 6-8 months. So then the question becomes, if a vet thinks this vaccine is necessary, are they giving it every 6 months? That's not to say that it can't last a year, but the AAHA is doing a pretty good job with their work on vaccines (imo). If I had a healthy dog who I boarded or got groomed, I may or may not do it. I really don't have the answer. But Ellie is rarely with other dogs and has enough issues to make it a bad idea to give non core vaccines. Besides rabies, we don't even do the core ones anymore. There are also different strains of KC. |
I agree with Ellie May that the AAHA is doing a good job on vaccines. The vet we go to follows AAHA guidelines for vaccines - a somewhat more conservative approach than some vets choose to follow. We do the bordatella vaccine (intranasal) annually. Our dogs are not at the kennel or groomers so are not at high risk, however, we do go on walks, and sometimes we do drop in at obedience class and daycare so we do administer it. As I mentioned previously, the one time we did not administer it, Barney had a bout of KC. He reverse sneezes so any cold he gets causes him to hack away. I should mentione that he also has had KC while ON THE VACCINE. So, this one is tricky. |

kennel cough per a vet tech is pretty easy to treat with antibiotics so many opt to not do it as does she and she shows her dogs and does agility as she said you can treat it and catch it early BUT it is highly contagious too so if you have more than one dog they can all likely catch it. Your dog can also get it from the vaccine so this is a real tough one |

oh and no where on blood work did it indicate pancreatitis - it was confirmed by vet viral infection and they state no clue how it happened lollll reaction happened within week of vaccinations and reactions to vaccines can happen up to a month after vaccine. There are accute reactions which is anaphylactic shot but there are also reactions that can happen after time in the system |

Wow that is crazy! Obviously it was the shot it sounds like! The Bordatella is tricky! And getting it every 6 months (via intranasal) just sounds like a lot IMO, especially if it can also cause it too. I didn't know that reactions to vaccines can happen up to a month either after the vaccine! I think the OP said she has a young puppy and they are going in for their 2nd round of Bordatella soon. Do puppies require getting it every couple of weeks like their other shots? I'm assuming that is the case, but that makes me a little nervous since Zoey will be due for her 2nd Bordatella next week and her Rabies shot too. I'm definately going to spread them out. I have a friend who has a puppy and her Vet gave the puppy his Distemper and the Bordatella (intranasal) together and her puppy threw up about 20 minutes after leaving the Vet. He's fine, but it totally scared her to death. |

i just asked jean for the best place to read about vaccinations and she sent me this site vaccine1.htm |
I just read the Brandi RIP thread. How very sad and devastating. Scares me to death about vaccinations now!! Do you think I should recommend to my friend getting a waiver or getting something else (not sure what - maybe someone has some suggestions) since when her puppy had his distemper shot and /bordatella (intranasal) he had a reaction (threw up). I think her puppy is also due for his rabies soon and I'm not sure what else. I will definitely tell her about Brandi and to make sure she spreads out any vaccinations if she hasn't already decided to or not. It's just so scary things like this can happen! |
