Dog tears - makes crunchies around eyes

I use a small cotton ball and then when I am combing her I get what is left.

My two get those crunchies as well. I try to comb them everyday with a flea comb...they wiggle at first, but then give up. I also use an all natural wipe made for dogs eyes.("True Blue") Mine also used to get the staining, but then I switched their food to a trout and sweet potato dog food and I've noticed that the brown is getting lighter...maybe it is food related or maybe some dogs are more prone to tear staining.

To OP, Sugar has this problem once in a while, I usually wash her whole face with warm water, just be gentle... sometimes it's the dirty face hair made them uncomfortable, thus the tears. I hope it helps in your case

I started using a product called Angel Eyes that you put on their food. Since using this their eyes look great!! No more eye gunk or crunchies!! Definately would recommend!! Even the staining on my mom's maltese is better!!

This is a great product. I use it as well. I think the tear staining has a lot to do with the food you feed. To clean the "crusties" I just use a warm wet cotton ball and wipe gently underneath the eyes and keep doing this until the crusties get soft and you can wipe them away. It sometimes takes a few cotton balls and patience. I use the cotton balls if the crusties are really build up or bad. Daily I just use puppy eye wipes and the Angel Eyes mixed in with their food. A small flea comb is also useful if you have trouble with the cotton ball or a fussy one that won't stand still for awhile.

I use a wet baby toothbrush, then wipe with a wet towel. Works like a charm, and shes used to the process now!

I sometimes give mine Angel Eyes too. My Vet doesn't recommend it, but I've read that a lot of breeders use it. I've also heard that it's a type of antibiotic.....has any one heard of or experienced any bad side affects with Angel Eyes?

Oh wow I didn't realize it was an antibiotic...I heard excellent reviews, so I thought I'd try it and it does seem to work, but I guess I'm a little skeptical now and will need to do some more research on possible bad side affects. Did you're vet state why he didn't recommend it?

Hi, No, my Vet just said it wasn't harmful to have brown stains and that Angel Eyes was just used for cosmetic purposes. (and she has 2 Maltese's) Then, I read online that it's a type of antibiotic. At Petfood Express...(a pet food store where I live) only sells products without byproducts. One of the employees said she would never give it to her dogs because it has antibiotics in it. I've researched and haven't found anything reguarding adverse side affects, but who knows. Most of the time you can find at least one thing bad...like with pet food. The breeder I bought my Morkies from said she hasn't heard anything bad about it. Many top breeders online say they use it. I figure since I already bought the small jar for $32.00!! I might as well finish it up. If I find anything more I'll let you know.

Bandit's tears are brown and Nala has none. Now, I'm going to tell you something super-gross which helped me.... Bandit EATS them after I pull them out!! I used to put them on a tissue and then one night he just ate them all off the tissue!!! So now he knows that for every eye crusty that get pulls he gets a snack.....DISGUSTING but effective

Hehehe...the disgusting duo!! That's the only girly thing Nala does is not eat her eye boogers (only because she doesn't have them but still.... one girly thing for Nala!!!)
