My 7 month old male Yorkie, Hadley has terrible breath, so I was reading that it would help to give him a carrot now and then which I have. Then I stumbled upon an article saying that carrots are really bad for Yorkies. Is this true because if so I feel terrible. Can anyone tell me what bad effects they have? I think his bad breath is from losing teeth right now.

Mine love carrots! Never heard of them being bad? Sounds like he may have retained teeth causing his breath to not be pleasant!

Do you feed raw carrots and how often? The vet checked his teeth when he was neutered and said none needed to be removed at the time. Over the last week he has lost three though. When I came home today he hadn't pooped all day though. I am seriously hoping he is not eating it and that is the cause

I feed raw. It will not hurt him to swallow a tooth, most do. I would check his mouth and see what you can see as far as teeth.

I can't find the article but it said that carrots can cause some sort of problem with the kidneys but didn't say exactly what. Glad to know its ok. I thought I was doing a good thing. I just give him a baby carrot whole and he loves it. I wasn't afraid he was eating the teeth by the way, I was afraid he was eating his poop since there was none to clean up today when I came home and eating the poop was causing the bad breath lol. Thanks for making me feel better I was so worried.

I'm not sure but I think I remember reading that baby carrots were not really good for them. Also, I have heard of some choking on the big pieces too. We just buy the big regular carrot. Peel it and them give him sliced carrots to help prevent him from choking.

I put the carrots in a cuisinart raw and chop them up into tiny pieces and then sprinkle them in Cerise's cooked food. I have never heard of carrots being bad for a Yorkie.

Hadley just gnaws on a baby carrot like he would a bone. Maybe I should be cutting them up though. I will try that. Thanks.

I wish I could find the thread about the carrots, but I remember it was about the ingredients for packaging. If I do find it, I will be sure to post here. Bella Loves carrots too.

Was it a preservative in certain brands, maybe? I can't remember for sure either.

My girls LOVE carrots. I had to slack of a bit b/c Maddie was getting were she would only eat when her food had carrots in it and sometimes eat just the carrots...such a brat.

Carrots themselves are healthy treats.

Thanks for posting this. I just looked @our package and ours are "Baby-cut" Carrots. So, there is a mixture of true & false on this subject. Chlorine is used, but is a current accepted practice for "all" fresh-cut read-to-eat vegetables.
You just don't know anymore. But I do feel it's so much better than most of the treats out there.

Thanks so much for finding that. So does that mean that baby carrots are ok but baby-cut carrots aren't? I went and looked and sure enough mine are peeled baby-cut carrots. Now not only do I feel bad about Hadley but I've been feeding those to my family for years. Is anything safe to eat anymore?? I will now only buy regular carrots and cut them myself. Thanks again.

I know what you mean.....I actually love them myself. Personally, I feel a little better about reading the article with the explanations and details.
