$200 sounds about right, I am in the NE and have paid up to $500 for X-rays taken at an Emergency Vet. I would definitely get them done though, dogs will walk with broken bones.
Just because it is not an open/compound fracture, (one that has opened up out of skin), does not mean that it might not be a greenstick or a comminuted fracture, (one in which the bones are splintered or crushed).

I have seen ones allowed to heal on their own without medical intervention and sometimes it disables the dogs gait for life, so getting an X-ray is the best possible course, just IMO.

Dogs don't show pain the way we do so it's impossible to guess at whether or not it is broken by the way she is acting.

I would think that $200 covers a set of X-rays, not just one.

Toy breeds are so prone to fractures because their legs are so tiny, you really need to rule it out. Hopefully it isn't anything serious, but better to be safe than sorry.

i agree better just find out and make sure. i don't want it the heal wrong and cause more problems in the future and if it's not broken we'll feel great knowing it's nothing but a sprain and will heal fine.

When Jackson came up limping, we got x-rays and it was 2 different angles. It was $102 for one angle, and around $95 for the other. It ended up being Lymes and nothing broken or LP or anything... so I guess technically it was a 'waste of money' but it was worth it just to know.

I had a xray last week of my girl to see how many puppies and it was $50 including office visit but know it is triple that in other offices in the area. My vet gives me breaks where I am a regular.

I hope you get her on the right treatment soon.

Definitely was not, and thank goodness you got those X-rays and found out about the Lymes. Lil fu fu girl has Lymes as well. Found out about it almost the same way, as it attacks the joints and it looks as if they have skeletal issues when you see their gait.

It seems to be everywhere here in MD! I am curious, did Jackson have to go on antibiotic therapy? When we found out about lil fu fu's Lymes it was about 2 years into the disease, the one doctor we had been going to apparently was not giving her the test or reading it wrong...scary huh?!!
So we found another vet and got her on antibiotics right away. Her count went right down after that. Thank goodness!

Well the results are....LP.

I had thought it might be when I felt on her knees and the sore one didn't feel the same as the other one.

We did get into a better vet at Shoal Creek and Mike took her and LOVED the service he got there in comparison to Banfield. We're not going back to Banfield for anything other than shot updates and i'll just eat the cost of my mistake there ($20 a month).

The new vet suggested to wait a couple more weeks to see if she improves on her own and it heals up. If she's still not walking well on it by a couple weeks we will go back for x rays to see how bad off it is and then consider a date for surgery. Please pray that she does improve and that at least for now surgery won't be neccessary. I am aware that in the future she will only get worse and will most likely need surgery to fix her LP in the long run. We will make the best possible choice we can for Sadie and are willing to do whatever it takes to secure her knees and make her pain free and comfortable.

Pray for us please. It's rough to have this hit us so early in her little life.

If the cost of spaying and puppy shots was included, the Banfield program wasn't too bad. Spaying would have cost over $200.00. Did the doctor say what grade of LP? I'm so sorry Sadie has to go through this, sending prayers your way.

i've called and asked for them to call back because they didn't tell Mike what grade and i wanted to know.

and yes for a spay and all the shots banfield was great. we've saved prob. well over thousands of dollars with their services. i am disappointed that their vets are mostly students and not experienced vets and that they didn't recognize LP when we brought Sadie in to them. we won't be going there for anything else that's major.

and thanks prayers will be needed.

Oh, dear. Luxating patellas are so common in toy breed dogs. Did your vet grade them? If they are only 1 or 2 she may never need surgery if you are careful not to let her jump on and off furniture.

I don't remember, but did you get a health guarantee with Sadie? Since she is so young most likely they are genetic. Most reputable breeders offer a health guarantee of at least one year so your breeder may help you with the cost of surgery if she needs it.

BTW, luxating patellas are diagnosed and graded by manipulation, not X-rays. If she hasn't improved in two weeks, I'd ask your new vet for a referral to an orthopedic vet.

well unfortunatly if you remember, we got her from a not so reputable breeder but they did guarantee against genetic problems for one year. so i might email them and see what that really means. i'll have to locate our contract.

either way i don't care if they help or not. we're fine to cover it and we know that our breeder wasn't the most reputable person so i don't count on him paying for anything.

Reputable breeders often will give the cost of puppy back to the pet owner; and you get to keep the dog. Some breeders will offer to exchange the dog, which is a worthless guarantee in my opinion. LP is tricky, because sometimes it's genetic and sometimes it's due to injury. She may have had the LP before the accident, in fact, the LP may have even caused the accident, but proving this would be difficult. I would always let a breeder know about the LP, if enough people tell him, maybe he'll get the message. This is one of the reasons, I suggest that people find the best breeders they can, it really saves you lots of money and heartache in the end.
