luxating patella.

My Chorkie Bobbi had her surgery today, she had a luxating patella on her rear right leg. poor thing is just wanting lots of cuddles, she cries every time i leave her. Our younger puppy Billi is a Yorkie Jack Russell cross and she is so active, much like the Jack Russell. It's going to be difficult tonight as they always sleep together and Bobbi has to sleep in her cage so she doesn't get troubled by Billi to play. Has anyone had this problem before? How did you cope?

Many of here have have babies that had that surgery...I'm answering to bump the thread up...You'll get lots of information and advice...I'll be saying a little prayer for your baby to recover quickly...

Snickers had LP surgery last November. It is so sad and not fun!!!! Snickers is extremely attached to us, and did tremendously well with surgery. His post op and physical therapy went very well as well. Snickers did not move to walk around much for the 1st 2-3 days but then he really wanted to move. The 1st night, we put him in his usual spot in our bed right in between us and also put him in one of his beds as well. He did not move a muscle all night. We were so worried about him, we barely slept. We did the same thoughout his entire recovery but I would not recommend doing that to just anyone.

I really think LP patients need to be in their crate so they do not start moving around and walking on 3 legs. The essential thing is for your pup to use their LP leg more and more. Snickers was walking on all 4 the 1st day he came home. Snick just did very well (thank god!) he is back to normal now and is doing incredibly. Please feel free to ask me any questions. Snick was on MANY (about 4) medications during recovery. He hated them all but they helped tremendously.

My yorkie Calli had that surgery several years ago. She is now turning 10. Every once in awhile that leg gives her trouble and she limps for a day. I would try to keep your dogs apart for awile, during the recovery time. Good luck.

Hi there, sorry that your baby had to go thru this. But at least now the healing can begin. The first couple of weeks are going to be the hardest. After that you'll start to see a big improvement in your baby and you will be able to sigh a big breath. It does get easier as time goes on. I promise.

The first couple of days are going to be rough but you must be strong. Unfortunately I am at work so I am limited in time but will be very glad to help you in anyway that I can. I'll pm you later on tonight when I get home. Give your baby a big kiss and a gentle hug! Bo

Also....getting a Kisse Collar from Bo (Mom to Hot Rod) would be helpful. We used ours daily for the 1st 2 weeks so Snick would not like his wound.

Just checking in and seeing How your little Bobbi is doing? Sorry I didn't get back last night, wound up falling asleep on the sofa...been a really long week at work!

Anyhoo, I would recommend keeping the 2 dogs separated. You shouldn't chance that Billi may land on Bobbi in a wrong way and hurt her leg. Our surgeon told us to keep Hot Rod in an area, at best 3 x 3 if not in a crate. I felt awful confining him so much that I wound up carrying him quite a bit. I would bundle up a blanket and have him lay on top of that and hold him and take him out for walks. He seemed to enjoy that quite a bit. Hubby would take him out to potty and set him down to do his business, I couldn't muster up the courage to do it.

I also wound up putting his harness on his and taking a neck lanyard, wrapping it around my wrist and hooking it to him while we were sitting at night watching tv. At least he was able to be out of his crate and with us. I had him lying on a table beside me on the sofa.

When we were not home, he was in his crate, no if's and or buts. It was really stressful, but I kept telling myself, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it was all for the better. To keep him quiet and still for the 6 weeks was minor compared to him being able to be pain free for the rest of his life. That kept me strong.

I would definitely watch the amount of blankets that you put in with him as well. Another yt member advised me against because she could get tangled up in them and hurt herself. Also be careful if you have hardwood or ceramic tiles or any type of slippery flooring. You don't want her to be able to slip.

Thanks Mom to Hot Rod, I did think that she could slip on our kitchen tiles cos they are ceramic, but for the last 4 days we've been carrying her everywhere. Billi seems to understand that Bobbi isn't very well and she's been very gentle with her. We are quite surprised as Billi usually runs around the house like a tornado and she often jumps on Bobbi for a bit of rough and tumble. We took her to the vet today for a check up, Her wound is slightly inflamed but she's taking anti inflammatories and anti biotics so we have to go back in 3 days to make sure they are working. We are still keeping Bobbi in her cage (crate) for most of the time and definately at night, Billi is being very good and sleeps in her bed next to the cage Ahhh, they are sooooo cute.
