| Shampoo & Rinses for Itchy Dog? Ruby (10 months old) has been itching and seeing a dermatologist for 4 months now. Before the allergy mystery gets solved, which I gather can take many more months, are there any shampoos or conditioners that are recommended to make her less itchy or help her feel more comfortable? The following is a quick outline of what she's on currently: * Canned Rabbit & Potato by Royal Canin * Carrots, Celery, Blueberries * 1 tablet/1.34mg Clemastine (anti-histamine) per day - she is 6lbs * Mometamax every 10 days (to control/prevent yeast infection in her ears) * Revolution every 2 weeks * Bath every 1-3 weeks with some combination of HyLyt shampoo, Virbac Epi-Soothe cream rinse (prescribed by general vet), EQyss Micro-Tek shampoo, and EQyss Mega-Tek Rebuilder (for her balding back legs). * She does not have any redness or infections in her skin, but around 3 weeks after a bath, small dandruff-looking flakes appear near her scalp. I feel like her allergy problems will eventually get resolved but in the meantime, I'm extremely confused how often to wash her and what shampoo/conditioners to try. I assume that medicated shampoos and rinses will relieve her itching so I want to wash her in it all the time. However, I worry that washing her too much will dry out her skin and hair and make the matter worse. I used to wash her once every 2 weeks up until she started itching. Then I tried washing her once a month, followed by washing her every week. No matter what I tried, it didn't seem to make a difference in her itching. I'm also confused about the water temperature to wash her in. Right now I usually wash her in the kitchen sink in water that is warm to the touch, slightly cooler than what I would shower in. However, even with that, when I try to leave the medicated rinse on her, she starts shivering in less than 2 minutes and I give in and just rinse her off. Is there some trick I'm not aware of where medicated shampoo/conditioner can actually be left on for 5-10 minutes without the dog freezing to death? I would love to hear any input on what worked for your allergic or itchy pup. My roommate said her dog (who is now living with her ex and his dogs) was prescribes some sort of tar bath? She doesn't know the name but has anyone heard of anything like that? As a side note, are there any other anti-histamines that you've tried? This current one doesn't seem to doing much but her dermatologist said to keep taking it a bit longer and see. Thanks for your help in advance! |
