By law you have to get a rabies vaccination every year, in order to comply with the licensing laws. In many areas, they do not even take into account that the rabies vacination is good for 3 years. It does not matter, you still have to get them every year. If you take your dog to day care or board them, they have to have recent vacinations.
So the change is going to have to start with the laws, and it will take heavy pressure from the breed clubs and the AKC to get the laws changed.
Humans do not require boosters every year, why should dogs. | AKC and the breed clubs will NEVER go down this path..it will take the pet owners along with many of the animal welfare organizations to make the changes. Breeders will never step over the line and will never make other breeders fall in line. They have their own secret code of not even turning each other in for animal abuse.
This letter is from England and will not carry any weight here in the states. It is just the way it is...even in our own food chains...we are the highest if not the hightest for shooting up the animals (cows, pigs etc)we eat in the world. And we wonder why there is so much cancer in us. Other countries have documented proof that we don't need to do what we are doing in this country but yet it continues because people really won't do their homework/research and demand changes with their lawmakers).
I have never seen or even heard about a vet not treating an animal that doesn't have vaccines...I have heard them say without proof they have to get the same shots over again instead of doing titer tests (because it costs more $$$ or because it brings more $$$ into the vets pockets. Fact of the matter is that many, many people do not take care of their animals unless they get very ill.
I will also say it took me over a year to come to my conclusions in regards to vaccinations (researching, reading, talking to 3 different vets) so I would caution everyone to not just jump into this without doing all of these things before you come to your decisions. This is very serious and each person has to come to their own conclusion.
In regards to Rabies, not all states require them and some are every year and some are every 3 years. You can choose to follow the law or you can choose to break the law but you need to understand what you are doing and what the fines could be and if your dog(s) bite someone without the shots. You are taking a huge chance but if you go down this path then I would strongly suggest you have the titer tests down every single year so you have something to go into court with or at the very least you have proof the dog is still guarded.
When it comes to vaccinations I have made my decisions but I would warn everyone to be careful who you tell not to get the Rabies shot...as you are telling them to break the law in many states. If a dog bites someone and it goes to court fingers could easily be pointed back to YT.
I am afraid to many young people or breeders will look at this as a way to save $$$ rather than by doing right by their dogs. Titer tests are more expensive than some of the shots and if people are going down this path then I believe titers need to be done... |
