I'm not sure what my vet uses, I'll have to check. I was told our humane society here uses a universal chip that most any scanner can read and it's a one time fee of $20.00. Does that sound right? We do have a good shelter here locally. Would you allow them chip your dogs?

Allot of the times you pay more because of course Dr charge more for their job or just the brand name. Ask who is giving the injection, what medical background they have. Trust me some inject in the wrong place and bie-bie chip. Don't mean to scare you but if it's just a volunteer then turn around. Otherwise I think it should be fine.
I don't believe in a monthly fee, as far as I'm concern there's no GPS chip to pay a monthly fee. That fee is for them to give you a courteous call that they found your dog instead of the person who scan them.

Max is chipped with Avid. He was chipped by the rescue group where I adopted him. I have the certificate and the #, so I was able to change the information to my name.
