How do you remember to give heartworm preventative?? How do you remember to give your pups the once-a-month heartworm preventative? I messed up big time, and now Gizmo and Kandi have to have the heartworm test before they can start taking the preventative again. Oh man!:( I'm so mad at myself. The vet's assistant says that she actually tapes the pill to the calendar. That sounded interesting. It comes in a blister pack, so it would still be wrapped. How do you remember??? |
I've created a monthly reminder on my cell phone. It's the only thing I've found that actually works. :D |
The Heartguard I give comes with little heart stickers that I put on the calendar each month. We start at the beginning of each month and that's when I always look at the calendar to see what's coming up for the month, birthdays, anniversaries, etc ;) |
I use those little stickers that come in the pack and stick them on the calendar day in the next month....i also use my iphone calendar and i put the alarm on for that day so it will remind me....also the calendar on my laptop! So i have three ways to hopefully remember!!! so far it works for me!! Good luck!:) |

That's a good idea! I had that before, but it went off while I was at work and I'd forget by the time I got home. I guess I could set it for a certain time of day like 7pm? Is that even possible? |
When living in Texas and it was necessary for heartworm meds I used Computer Calander.....that was the first thing that popped on when I turned on the computer. Programmed it as a recurring monthly appointment.....every 30 days. Dependent on the heartworm med you use you have a 15 day leaway...... |
I always give Sophie her heartworm preventative medicine on the 1st day of each month. Just a habit!!! Her flea prevention medicine is also given at this time since it's once a month also! |
Do you have an iPhone? I know on the iPhone calendar, you can set an alarm, and then a 2nd alarm to remind you at a later time. I don't think you can set the alarm for a certain time though. |
We use...what is it called? Ivermectin?? Anyway, I don't think those little stickers come with it, but I could buy some heart stickers or draw a heart on the calendar each month. |

I have Outlook on my computer, so that's a possibility too. Thanks! |

You will be able to put reminder on your blackberry. We use the stickers with Interceptor, and I have my calendar hanging on the fridge so I see it all the time. |
I use Yahoo calendar for a whole bunch of stuff / reminders - one of them being heartworm. So, every month on the 30th - I get an email reminder (to my hotmail address) that it's Heartworm time on the 1st :)! I also have all birthdays and other events set up at Yahoo calendar too. I like Yahoo bc when you set up an "event" or a "reminder", you have so many choices (as in, send the reminder 14 days before or 1 day before etc) and "repeat" event. |
Thanks everyone! Great suggestions. |
...by reading posts like this evidently. Thanks for the reminder. |
Hi Judy.....I registered Lucky with a website called remindmypet.com and they send me an email reminder for any medications that has to be given......you can register any number of pets and whatever meds they take!! It's the best!!!:) It's worth checking out! |

Question -- just reading this thread, I'm freaking out! I have not given Jackson his heartworm medicine for the month of December nor January yet. I have 3 remaining to give him in my box. It's been cold here so I'm not too worried about mosquitos, does everyone give theirs yearround? Also, since it's been 2 months, does he need a heartworm test before giving him medicine again? |

I really do love the yahoo calendar thing - bc I once I get the reminder email in my Inbox, I won't let myself delete it, until I've given the med...so it's practically Ann-proof :p. |
This is just a suggestion.. don't want to step on anyones toes. If you do have trouble remembering to give your babies their heartworm preventatives, their are other options to consider. I don't know if it is available in the US (as i live in Canada) but there is a 6 month heartworm prevention method called Pro Heart 6. it is an injection (given by a Veterinarian). You just have to ask your veterinarian about other options your clinic could offer you :) Also, it is just heartworm prevention.. there isn't flea prevention in it, like some others offer. Hope that helps. :D |
I do it on the first of the month. I keep pills sitting out in sight with other grooming products like nail clippers and toothpaste. It can't be missed for more than they need bathed. |

you know, funny you should bring very topic up. I told hubby it was time for their pills the other day (I give it to them on the 9th of every month) and he said that he'd just given it to them...I didn't remember do it it. He's the one who actually gives them the pills but I am the one who reminds him. I was going to call the vet to see if what I should do. I will do that on my lunch break. This is the first time that this has come up with us. :( I like the idea of taping it to the calendar as even the reminders on the cell phone are heard but then forgotten by the time I get home. |
