Pumpkin for constipation I've heard that pumpkin is good for constipation for these little york'sters...I bought a can of it, and wondered how much you would give a 5 lb. yorkie...I think Apple is uncomfortable, because she hasn't had a bm, since her spay...I also think the pain meds added insult to injury w/the constipation...She's on raw, and you guys that feed raw know their stools are rather firm to begin with, w/o having had surgery and pain meds

You can also add more organ meat (like liver) and sometimes eggs works too I believe. I would stay away from too much bone right now though.

YOu really can't give too much- Layla hates it so it is hard to get in her when she isn't feeling well to begin with- if you can get 1-2 tsps in i think that should do the trick. YOu might try mixing it with yogurt to get her to eat it.

My dog is on raw as well. She eats Primal chicken. I bought her recently a can of Fruitables pumpkin and cinnamon as a snack because I typically don't give her any snacks but organic raw carrots and organic raw baby beets. So, I wanted to try some other purely vegetable snacks for variety when I discovered pumpkin. I've been given her this pumpkin for about four days and her stool is much softer than it was before. She is 3 to 3.5 lbs and I've been giving her a tea spoon at a time twice a day. She LOVES pumpkin to the point of obsession. I've never seen anything like that before. However, since we haven't had any problems with constipation while on raw, I am going to discontinue it because I think it softens her stool where she does not need it. However, if constipation is your dog's issue, I can't recommend it enough. It's clearly very palatable and highly effective. At the same time, it's very low calorie. As a side note, if you just started raw diet, you should investigate different brands and protein sources within raw because all of them contain different fiber concentration that affect your dog's stool. Nature's Variety and Stella & Chewy's have 95% protein to 5% veggies. It is much harder to digest for some dogs with sensitive stomach. We've tried them all. So, it comes from experience. For us, Primal chicken nuggets work best (2nd best is duck). This formula contains only 60 % protein and less organ meat. So, it is easier on the liver and on digestion. Try switching between formulas because I still believe no matter what that raw is THE ONLY way to go. Make sure you stay with raw. It's night and day as far as the health and well being of the animal is concerned.
