Hartz regular shampoo - safe or not? I have heard all kind of bad stories about Hartz brand products, but only after the fact that I bought this shampoo. I never used it yet so if it's horrible then I won't. I mostly only see people having problems with the Flea & Tick shampoo and products, but not just the regular shampoo. This one says 3-in-1 Conditioning Shampoo. It conditions, cleans and detangles. Would this be ok or not as it is not Flea & Tick shampoo? I am not sure what the ingredient in Hartz is that people are having poison problems with their dogs that even become fatal. Doesn't it start with a "P"? Is it Panthenol? I'd really like some information. We spent a lot of money getting a good food and other items and thought the shampoo we could slack a little on since we kind of went over board LOL. I'm sure you all know how that is!! |
Everything Hartz produces is produced with cheap materials. I would return it and buy human hair products. Yorkies hair is not like other dogs and you have to think about it the same as yours. |
Well I honestly use the cheap stuff on my own hair like VO5 or Suave because it works just fine for me. When I was young and growing up these brands were the big shots but now they are the cheapo brands, and I always just stuck with it. As far as using human hair products on my dog, I have read in various books and websites that this is not a good idea unless it's like a no tears baby shampoo. Is that true? |
I personally wouldn't use human hair products. I thought they are known to dry out and irritate the skin? I use Buddy Wash on Jackson, got it @ Petco. It works great & smells good. :) |
I'm not sure if the hartz regular shampoo is safe or not. If it were me I wouldn't take the chance. It seems many of their products cause bad side effects. |
I double checked all the ingredients and they seem normal to other shampoos, they advertise on the bottle that they use ''Panthenol" in this particular shampoo which is found in other shampoos. I googled this ingredient and it's derived from a natural plant and used as a detangler. So far this particular one seems harmless, it's not for fleas or ticks or any kind of medicated, just for washing only. I went ahead and tried this as the ingredients didn't show anything out of ordinary in comparison to other dog shampoo ingredients, she did 100% fine and I have been monitoring her skin just to be sure. Next time I will get another kind just to get out of this brand but so far it seems ok. I don't want to continue using Hartz if it is such a disasterous brand as something might come up that is bad and I'd never want to put my dog in danger. |

Thank you very much, Nancy. I didn't seem to find Hartz to be over priced, they were cheaper than anything I saw at Target, PetsMart and Pet Supermarket. The only reason that I went with the shampoo, was because the ones at these other places didn't smell very nice. (by the way I emailed them at bioderm to request free samples!) Most of the shampoos are coconut flavor, and I really don't like the smell. Also most of them seem to have specific purposes, like flea preventative or for super curly hair or something like that and this one was just a general detangler shampoo. Is it normal for yorkies hair to be very thin? It seems on her back you can see her skin sometimes if her hair is tossled the right way, and also when I bathed her it was as if she had no hair at all but dry it looks mostly normal, just on the occasion it looks bald-ish? It was like that before I shampood so I don't think this is a result from the shampoo or bath. |

fine hair I don't know what her hair was like before, I only just adopted her on tuesday evening. She is 7 years old. She doesn't seem to have any skin allergy where she might lose the hair or itch it off. She doesn't itch or have red skin under the hair. It's just like really fine. It looks even weirder when it's wet, like you can see where it's thicker grown in some places and thin or non existent in others. But like I said, when it's dry you don't totally notice unless either you're looking for it specifically, or her hair just happens to be tossled away from the areas. It just seems to be along her back on the top and right before her rump area starts. |
Is it going to hurt your pup? Probably not. I guess my question is, since the company obviously doesn't care if a lot of illnesses and deaths are happening because of their product, why trust them? And why support their business. I would not use it. Human shampoo has a different pH than dog shampoo. I would use something dog-specific. |

I think you'll like the biogroom when the samples come. It's one of the more affordable ones that I really like. Just make sure you're using a tearless kind on her head & face. BTW, Biogroom also has Silk Conditioner - great stuff. |
Oh, John Paul Pet has an Oatmeal shampoo that smells like amaretto cherry. We also use Pet Head. I know many people like Biogroom, but it's a matter of smell preference. :) I would not like the smell on Ellie at all. |
Believe it or not, regular Dawn dish washing detergent (one drop mixed with 3 cups of water) will do a good job. Followed by a coat condition (oatmeal based is good) Dawn is safe to use on pets and wildlife. I use it all the time and have for 20 15 yrs. Remember it has to be VERY diluted, a little goes a very long way. *** It's not a sexy little shampoo in a cute as a button bottle, but you can spend the extra $$ on the coat conditioner. My yorkies have always had great skin, shiny coats and are very very bunny rabbit soft. I do not use it on puppies under 8 months. Just sharing ...one of my ways to save a few pennies, I bath my dog 1-2 times a week.:aimeeyork |

Dog shampoo This i8s a great thread. I have requested some free samples from Biogroom as well. I have been using Hartz Oatmeal shampoo for like 8 years with no problems but with five furrbabies, it seems I'm buying it every other week. I also use the tearless puppy shampoo from Hartz on their face & head. Both of the Hartz shampoos I've noticed I have to use soooo much of it in order to get a good lather up, so that's why I'm buying it so often. The Biogroom Tearless seems to be alot more cost saving as you mix it 4 parts to one. I can't wait to get the samples. For those of you who use Biogroom, how does it smell? |
I didn't have that problem so much with the kind I have getting it to lather. The only thing I seemed to find myself doing is using small amounts at a time to lather different areas, as she kept moving around and wouldn't sit still lol. |

If you really need to get your dollars worth there's a product called Mane & Tail. It was originally made for horses. You can find it at WalMart or Sally's Beauty Supply. |
Well there is nothing wrong with this one particular product by Hartz. It's just a regular shampoo that doesn't have medicated ingredients in it. It uses the same as others, actually. I did an ingredient comparison. I agree with a few who have mentioned that Hartz only got its 'bad' name for their medicated products for fleas and ticks that went bad from a chemical they were using that is a 40 year old chemical that is now linked to be poisonous in dogs. I did a bit of research on that since I started the thread. I didn't buy it because it was 'cheap' though it was definitely a plus, I bought it because everything else I came across smelled like crap lol |

Not that people should go out and buy it specifically, but the ingredients are almost the exact as others. So saying it's bad is basically saying that any general dog shampoo is bad because it's made mostly of the same things. But if you already got it I don't think there is any harm to use it. The regular shampoo nothing else. |

I have and will always use human conditioner products on mine, many have asked what I use because of how great my Yorkies hair looks and feels. and I do believe its the human conditioner that is working so great for them. just make sure you rinse it all out good. |
