I see so many threads about feeding and people saying they wouldn't feed Royal canin...just wondered why people do not seem to have a good word to say about it, I have been feeding Pixie RC (mini Junior) and she seems fine on it, healthy skin, coat and good weight for her size, her breeder feeds it too and she shows at crufts every year, her dogs certainly look fantastic on it! was just curious to know why...am i feeding a bad food?

What works for one might not work for another. The three reasons I do not like RC are:

It has been known to cause extreme itchiness in Yorkies. If you type Royal Canin in the "Search", you will see what I mean.
There is way too much corn in it.
It is way overpriced for a cheaply made food.

Why would you want to feed something like RC when there are foods that are so much better? That's my question. Sure, it's better than things like Iams and Purina, but there are other foods that a lot better with a lot less fillers. Especially for the same or even less!

I'm wondering what other 'good' foods are available to me in the UK? anyone have any ideas? thanks for all your comments so far! I appreciate it so much!
what do you guys think of James Wellbeloved? not sure if you can get this in the USA or not though?

I think that is only available there...

You can go to www.dogfoosanalysis.com and type in whatever the name of the food is. Also, look at the foods they have listed at 5 or 6 star and see if you can find those there.

I thought that may be the case..I have been told by some that it is a good food with no fillers such as wheat or corn etc..i'm just wondering if they do the kibble in the tiny bite size as Pixie has such a tiny mouth!

Agreed. IAMS, Purina, and RC are under one umbrella company. So it sorta reflects badly on all of those brands.

Since you live in the UK, you are probably thinking of the original Royal Canin made years ago in your country. It was excellent food, about the best you could buy before all the premium food we now have on the market came out. It was hard to find in the US, though.

When Waltham bought the right to market it over here, they changed the recipe and added cheap fillers like corn. The upscale boutiques that used to carry Royal Canin stopped carrying it. It's now just an over priced mediocre quality food.

You can probably still get the "real" Royal Canin over there.

When mine were on RC, it made them extremely thirsty. They seem to enjoy eating it, but I didn't like what it was doing to them. I'm not sure if they were itchy, but I know for sure it got them dehydrated.

Like what Ellie May said, what works for you might not work for others.

Dehydrated poultry meat
Rice
animal fats
maize gluten
beet pulp
Hydrolysed animal proteins
poultry proteins
minerals
vegetable fibres
yeast
soya oil
fish oil
Fructo-oligo-saccharides (whatever that is!)

egg powder
DL-methionine

Taurine
marigold extract

Average Analysis: protein 33%- Fat 20%-ash 5.5%-fibre 2.2%

I think they need to name their animals and not just say "animal fats". They should do the same for their poultry.

well,, i'm currently feeding Royal Canin with no problems, ,to my 3 Yorkies,,and have for over 2 years now,, but am looking to find Merrick locally and see about switching them over after researching online and reading all the opinions here,, but i do have a question as to kibble SIZE on Merrick???? is it a small enough bite for Yorkies to handle easily and to help keep their teeth clean and healthy too? thanks for Inputs here ,,

you guys & gals are just great!! ;-)
