| Angels' eye tear stain remover recalled? I heard from some employee in a local pet supply store, that this product is recalled. However I still find this product is sold everywhere. Anyone knows? or have links on the news? thank you |

| There is nothing on their website: Angels Eyes | Tear Stains | Pet Coat Stains | Eye Care For Pets | Eye Stains Plus I don't see how this product could be recalled...I am not sure who would dictate that.

| I haven't heard anything either. I used Angel Eyes on my shih tzu for a few weeks and it worked like a charm. The staining hasn't returned either. I hope they keep it on the market. I know it is either an anti-fungal or antibacterial product (I forget) so there could be some truth to the rumor. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You're like my husband, if someone works in a store, he assumes they know something. People often pass on news they overheard or misunderstood, or simply made up. I don't ask Petsmart employees anything more than "can you tell me where to find product X." Most aren't even very good at that.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh, I'm so sorry, I wasn't saying a thing against you; I guess it was that little jab at my hubby. I was just trying to reassure you that you can't rely much on what the store employees say. I think you are very wise to check up on this, it may be true, I have no idea, it's just until more facts are known, I wouldn't worry. Again, my apologies.

| I read at my Petsmart that there was a registration problem with Angel Eyes and they have chosen not to sell it. Someone also told me that it has an antibiotic in it. I know many people who have used it for years and all is well with their babies. I don't know what to think now...I still use it though. |

| I used this for maybe a week or so on my new puppy, because I heard good things about it and that it prevents tear staining. However, upon more research I learned that it does contain a low dose antibiotic called Tylosin which is technically a prescription only item (an offence to buy or use it - technically speaking). With any antibiotic given long term it can cause the dog to build up a resistance, making it very hard for a Vet to treat the dog if it gets an infection. And it can be harmful to the kidneys and liver also. It really only should be used for short periods and even then the stains may or may not come back when you stop. I haven't had any real problems with tear staining or eye discharge, so I opt not to use it. I heard if you want something you can use safely all year long to look at Naturvet or Angels Delight by Bichon Hotel. I haven't looked into these two other mentioned items yet, but I have stopped using Angel Eyes. Also, I believe tear staining/discharge has a lot to do with a dogs diet and what you feed them. It's more common I believe in food with higher protein levels. Last edited by kate07; 04-06-2010 at 06:52 PM. |

| I have seen blogs saying that reps said that this was down to licencing issues. It is not clear if these are PETSMARTS or ANGELS EYES reps. When the UK version of the FDA, the VMD, decided enough was enough and that it was time to stop people selling Angels Eyes, they raided a handful of sellers and took the stock. They hoped that the word would get out and that everyone else would stop. Whilst this was happening the Angels Eyes reps said that it was a minor licencing problem that would be resolved in a few weeks. Two years on it is still banned (and Angels Eyes still post it to the UK!!). The VMD has said that the tylosin based products will NEVER be allowed without a Marketing Authority. This is a very, very, very expensive approval system that would require long term studies of the safety of Tylosin in dogs (and to a lesser degree in other animals). There was short term studies in dogs back in the 60's when Tylosin was being approved for livestock usage but to date there has never been any long term dog studies. Hence tylosin is FDA approved but not for dogs or cats, only for livestock- poultry, cows and pigs. The VMD also say that even with a Marketing Authority it is unlikely that tears stain removal would not be considered an appropriate use of an antibiotic. For a number of years the FDA have said that the likes of Angels Eyes are illegal- perhaps this is their broadside shot, a clarion call. This might be politically motivated with a new administration raising concerns about the over use of antibiotics. Concerns which have been echoed by the WHO with reference to the likes of tylosin as a growth promoter in livestock. Even McDonalds now refuse to buy meat that has been subjected to antibiotic use as a growth promoter. Whilst I am only speculating it does seem very likely that this is the start of the end for the tylosin based products after-all they are illegal. Given their finite resources it makes sense for the FDA to approach the larger firms first rather than going after the smaller ones. Legal loopholes mean that Angels Eyes is probably not breaking the law buy mixing the two products, ie tylosin and ground beef liver. They are probably not even breaking the law by selling it to customers abroad. It would be nice though if they told customers that it is illegal for THEM to use it... |
