| whats best for our new pup? We have an 11 week old Yorkiepoo at home and after reading around on the site a little bit I've found lots of great information but I'm still curious and have a few questions. The day after Jax got home he refused to eat anything we gave him and it got to the point where the hypoglycemia started to kick in so we brought him to the vet right away and our vet did all the blood work and found that his WBC was high so he was given some antibiotics and a shot of glucosse for his blood sugar. She gave us a special type of food so we could syrnge feed him and after that we got him to eat white rice with a chicken baby food as recommended and now he's beome such a picky eater.. the only thing we've been able to get him to eat is Iam's wet food (chicken flavored) and trying to mix in some kibbles to get him use to eating hard food. He will take the kibbles out of his bowl and eat the wet food. I guess what I'm looking for is what kind of food would be recommended for those picky eaters? and when should we start the dry food? I know all about the mixing in old with new and such I just don't know what to get him. Also, for treats he's been eating the flavored milkbones but I've read on here that they're not such a great choice. What do you guys recommend for treats? We were letting him chew rawhides but he started getting this coughing/gagging problem so we though maybe the rawhides were causing this. We ended up going to the vet for that and he has some kind of respitory problem so he's on antibiotics for that now as well but we've still chosen to refrain from rawhides. Any info would be much appreciated!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Can you get to a Petco? I'd recommend the Solid Gold food, and I believe SG has a puppy food and/or all life stages food. Wellness is good to. If you go to a specialty store, then maybe Orijen? I'd give him the new food once he seems more stable/settled. For chews, I give bully sticks and CET Dental Chews.

We have been feeding tootsie "Natural Balance" but recently found out that they use Ethoxyquin!! Some of my YT friends have recommended Innova, Evo, and California Natural...We went out yesterday and looked for one of these three foods and ended up with "Now" Natural Grain Free because we couldn't find any of the others in a puppy formula unless it was special ordered... As for the coughing/gagging problem? Tootsie started doing that about 3 days ago??? She has been kinda lazy and not herself!!! I guess we will have to make another trip to the vet!!!

| There was a recent thread about high quality foods. I rec Orijen if you can find it. Lily doesn't like hard kibble. One method is take whatever kibble you are feeding, put in a tupperware container and then fill to the top of the kibble line with water. Make sure you put water in second. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, mush it up and you have wet dog food out of whatever kibble you like. I also mix her kibble in with Wellness 95% meat. It comes in different varities so it adds taste to keep her interested. As far as the rawhide, especially in a pup as small as Yorkies, I never ever give it. I don't even give rawhides to our big dog. He gets real meat bones from our specialty pet store as well as Busy Bones that you can find at any Pet Store. Rawhide easily breaks off into fragments and it also expands in the stomach. I've heard too many horror stories about it. Good luck with your new pup! Welcome to YT! In regards to the coughing and gagging Tootsie, does she have nasal discharge and watery eyes? Is she eating? Is her coughing/gagging continuous? Last edited by ArmyWife313; 09-09-2009 at 07:08 AM. |
