Does your premium dog food contain Ethoxyquin? I received this article about ethoxyquin from here, I thought it was very important to see.... Risk Ingredients Not Listed on Pet Food Labels Fish meal suppliers add ethoxyquin prior to ingredient delivery at the pet food manufacturing plant. And guess what? That ethoxyquin added to the fish meal, because it wasn’t added by the pet food manufacturer, is not required to be listed within the ingredients on the label! This is a strong carcinogenic, you may be poisoning your pet and not knowing it......Fish meals, NOT fish ingredients are a concern with ethoxyquin. Of types of dog food, the “premium” brands of dry dog foods are most often incriminated. However, no correlation of adverse effects with age, gender or breed of dog is apparent. The reported signs include liver, kidney, thyroid and reproductive dysfunction, teratogenic and carcinogenic effects, allergic reactions and a host of skin and hair abnormalities. There have been anecdotal reports that some of these conditions have resolved after replacement of the ETQ-containing diet with a diet thought to be free of ETQ. By the way, the FDA based it approval of ethoxyquin in animal feeds on ‘research’ conducted by Monsanto; the manufacturer of ethoxyquin. Here is a list of manufactures that have responded to the ingredients request..... Artemis Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Breeders-Choice – AvoDerm Natural Pet Food “Breeder's Choice does not use ethoxyquin in any of it's foods. However, because it is found in the food chain, trace amounts cannot easily be eliminated.” Blue Buffalo Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved naturally with Naturox.” By Nature Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with natural tocopherols.” California Natural, Innova, Evo Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with Vitamin E and mixed tocopherols.” Canidae/Felidae Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Castor & Pollux Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with Naturox.” Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Diamond Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Evolve Natural Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with mixed tocopherols.” Flint River Ranch Pet Food “Fish meal is flash frozen until time of manufacturing; no preservative needed.” Fromm Family Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with citric acid.” Kumpi Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with tocopherols.” Merrick Pet Foods “Fish meal preserved with mixed tocopherols.” Natural Balance Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Nature’s Logic Pet Food “Fish meals are preserved with natural tocopherols and rosemary.” Newman’s Own Pet Foods “Fish meals preserved with Vitamin E.” Petcurean Pet Foods “Fish Meal is preserved with Vitamin E.” Premium Edge Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Solid Gold Pet Foods “Fish meal preserved with tocopherols.” Taste of the Wild Pet Foods Per Diamond Pet Food (manufacturer) “all fish meal, ocean fish meal, and salmon meal ingredients are preserved with ethoxyquin.” Timberwolf Organics Pet Foods “Fish meal ingredients are preserved with Vitamin E.” TLC Pet Foods “Fish meal is preserved with tocopherols.” |
Orijen does not use it. Says so right on the bag. It's one of the only two kibbles I will use. |
I'm glad your pet food is alright.....For the people feeding their pets....Artemis, Canidae, Chicken Soup, Diamond, Natural Balance, Premium Edge, and Taste of the Wild this is of great cobncern..... And remember the manufacturer does not have to list this on the bag even if it is in there because they did not put it in there during the production process!....This is a list of the ones that responded back there are a lot of manufacturers who did not reply back so their foods is not know if they're safe from it.... |
I've had not researched too much into it other than knowing that Orijen does not use it, but I wonder if it has to do with Orijen's fish being fresh and never frozen. But if it has to be frozen before processed, then maybe a company uses it? |
I can only see that it is meal and not fish from this quote.... Fish meals, NOT fish ingredients are a concern with ethoxyquin. As example, ‘salmon’ listed on a pet food label would not be an ethoxyquin preserved ingredient; ‘salmon meal’ might be. The ONLY way to know is to ask the manufacturer specifically. Warning however, some responses I have received did not directly answer my ethoxyquin question. As example, one manufacturer told me “we do not add ethoxyquin to any of our pet foods”. This response does NOT tell me if their supplier might add ethoxyquin. I am waiting for their follow up response. What really concerns me from this quote is that when the manufacturer was asked if they use ethoxyquin they said no. BUT that does not mean the fish meal supplier did did use it .....This is the pet foods sneaky way of skirting the issue....Scary.....It seems the only way to be absolutely sure is to NOT use pet food with fish meal in it..... |
That's another reason why I use Orijen. They catch the fish and they process it. They know exactly where it comes from. |

Thank you so much for letting us all know this very important information. :) I don't feed mine any of those brands listed but I sure will tell the people I know who do feed any of those brands what you found out. Thanks again!!! :) |
Ran out of time...sorry...continued... On the front of the bag in caps it says " Acana's Animal ingredients are Ethoxyquin - free and made exclusively from animals of Canadian origin that are passed as fit for human consumption". |
I feed Evo (Natura). I hope her food is ok! |
Thanks for letting us know! I'm so glad Addie is on Orijen. I'm so happy with the ingredients in their Six Fish, I wrote the company to say thanks, and I have never done that before. |
Your welcome everyone!!! I hope more people see this it is so important!!!....This is a very toxic ingredient and I'm very surprised at some of the names on it!!!....I've even bought some of them myself....The scary thing is this is not a complete list....... |
WOW is all I can say!!!!! I can't believe that so many of the "premium" manufacturers would knowingly use this and not list it as an ingredient regardless of whether they added it. That just seems very irresponsible and opens up lots of liability....... |

I know there are many members on here who are using these brands, I just hope it's not the ones with the fish meal in it....On the other hand I wouldn't feel comfortable using any other types from these manufacturers, because if they lie about the fish meal would you want to trust them with their other types of food?.... |
this is scary! thank you for posting this. |
Wow, how scary is that?! Thanks so much for posting this. Where can I get Orijen? The food Jillie is currently on, is on the list so I need to change. |
We use Nature's Variety and they claim it does not contain fish preserved with Ethoxyquin. |
Thanks. SO California Natural doesn't use it?? |

Thanks for the info! |
Thanks. |
Great research! Thanks for posting. |
This is from makers of Innova, EVO, Healthwise, and California Natural Natura's pet foods are preserved with Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols -- alpha, beta, gamma and delta isomers) and Vitamin C. We test our pet food ingredients by routine sample to make sure they are free from chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin to laboratory standards |
Only Solid Gold and Blue Buffalo kibble. I sent both companies an email about this awhile ago. Neither use it! |

Here's Orijen's website: Orijen Take a look at the ingredients. It's really a great product. I'm really happy with their Six Fish. You can find out on their website if they sell in a physical store near you. |
Thanks, I will see about ordering Orijen and try Jillie on it. :aimeeyork |
Okay, I'm confused by this part in the article: The pet food company that I so completely and blindly trusted, told me the dog food had a shelf life of 25 years! That’s a dog food remaining ‘fresh’ for more than 3 times as long as my dog lived thanks to a lethal chemical. A month or so ago when I was moving, I noticed one of my bags of Natural Balance that I had just bought had expired about 5 weeks prior to me purchasing it. I emailed NB to find out if it was still safe to feed to my dogs, and the response was to not feed anything past the expiration date. (I just double checked this...I still have the email.) If this ethoxyquin is in NB, why would I be told not to feed a bag mere months after the expiration date? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of ethoxyquin?? |
Okay, from this list, what brand of puppy food should I get?? |
We feed the baby puppy Innovia small bites and canned. The rest eat Innovia and Evo. Hope these are okay. It is so scary. I guess there is really no way of really knowing for sure what we are feeding them. |
Thanks for posting this. I have a lot to consider now.:( |
