First I just want to say that I really love this online community!! I have only been a member for a few days and I have found and been given great advice and info. A couple of people have said that I should get my Yorkie puppie some Nutrical but I cant seem to find it anywhere and was wondering if anyone knows where the best place to purchase would be??

You can get Nutrical from Petsmart for about $10.

I believe you can get it at any local pet store. I used to buy it for my cat and have recently purchased it for one of my puppies. Your vet should have some as well.

Thanks! I will see if my vet carries it first as PetSmart is about 30 min. away from me(or any other pet store for that matter...uggh)!!

Last but not least if your still having problems finding it................your vet! A little more expensive but sometimes you just don't have a choice!

Karo syrup is another option if you are unable to locate Nutrical. It is available in grocery stores (typically in the baking section). If you choose this route, from my understanding, the white Karo Syrup is better than choosing the dark type.

haven't seen anyone address this aspect. Nutracal should not be given as a routine thing. Only keep it on hand in case your puppy shows signs of hypoglycemia. Some people gove it two or three times a day every day and that is bad. it can cause your pup to eventually have diabetes because of the fluctation in glucose levels.

I agree with this, I think Nutri-cal is way overused; it's mainly corn syrup, which is sugar that reaches the blood fast. White Kara syrup can be used, and a little on the roof of the mouth can elevate they symptoms of hypoglycemia. I don't think too much sugar causes diabetes, they're not certain what causes that yet, but it can cause another episode of hypoglycemia. It's best to familiarize yourself with the symptoms of hypoglycemia, and use it only to elevate symptoms, not as a preventative, unless your vet has instructed you to do this. Some extra small puppies may need it because they have no fat storage, and dogs with undiagnosed infections may experience hypoglycemia, so if your dog has the symptoms often, a vet check is in order.
