| New Member - Collapsing Trachea ? Hello, I'm a new member. I have a 13 year old Yorkie mix, Phoebe, who has a collapsed trachea. Phoebe is 5 lbs. She was diagnosed last year with a grade 4 heart murmur, and is currently taking both Enalapril and Vetmedin. She was doing fine on both of those meds, until this weekend when she started to breathe rapidly. We took her to her vet today, who x-rayed her from the sides. Her lungs look good and seem clear with no fluids, but since her heart is enlarged, it's pushing on her trachea. Her heart is crowding her little trachea, and the vet said she is having problems exhaling, not inhaling. She is still eating well and very perky. We want to keep her happy and comfortable for as long as possible. My vet is currently researching solutions into other meds which could help her, and I told her I would research answers also. Sorry this is long, but I know in the past that Yahoo group members can provide a wealth of helpful information regarding pet health. If anyone can tell me if they've had a similar experience and what the specific meds are that helped them, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Sherrie (and Phoebe) |

| My Paddy passed away 3 years ago from the same problem he had the same meds as you are using, when first diagnosed the xray showed as yours that the enlarged heart was pressing his trachea against his spine,he also had an enlarged liver, some other meds for that. With careful medication and care he lived a fruitfull two more years before passing away at the grand age of 14. While it was sad to lose him, I am so glad we never had him put to sleep as he enjoyed his time with us so much, the vet warned me it would be expensive, my attitude was, you are not putting my best mate to sleep and so we had a couple more years with each other, he eventually died of heart failure in my arms. God bless you Paddy, never forgotten my little friend. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I have a friend whose dog had a collapsing trach. The vet told her to water down her hard food, or feed canned food. Might ask if that would help. So Sorry you are going through this. ((BIG HUGS)) |
