| Picking up everything outside ? I am wondering about everything that he picks up and chews on while outside. We have a fairly large fenced backyard and he goes out there and literally everything goes in his mouth! As far as I know he hasn't swallowed anything but its leaves, sticks, little buds off the tree, grass. Can you tell me is there anything harmful that I should really watch out for. Also, when I try to grab him to pull it out of his mouth he runs in the other direction. Any thoughts, or advice would be greatly appreciated. |

| I have the very same problem that you have. My baby boy, who will be a year next month, puts everything in his mouth. He has never been sick except when he has eaten somthing that he was not supposed to. The last time we were at the vet's it was becasue he had eaten some leaves outside and it had upset his tummy! He had a tiny bit of mucusy blood in his stool so I took him in. They told me that leaves can really hurt their little intestines, so they put him on 2 antibiotics and an antacid....$160. later. The time before that he had gotten into the lining under the sofa in the living room and had an upset tummy. He was vomiting and had diarreah, so we had to xray to see if the might be an obstruction - there was not. Just more meds and another huge bill! He is a little stinker, but they are worth it...just try to keep an eye on him. I think mine just has an especially sensitive stomach - good luck. Your baby is beautiful! |

| Default Picking up everything outside? My little Graysee does the same thing. Our yard is fenced, too, but it's heavily landscaped, and I have to be diligent to inform her of what to stay away from. She is pretty good, as she moves away from something immediately if I say "NO EAT!". There is a good list of harmful plants somewhere on this site, but I'm not exactly where I saw it, so I'll try attaching my own version here, if I can find it. I suggest just monitoring your pup until he/she learns what's off-limits. But, I still have to chase mine sometimes to get something away from her; I think she believes we're playing! |

| Jackson seems to do the same thing. Usually, he will spit out what is not good for him though. Minus his poop eating problem. Everytime I see him out back, he's got some stick in his mouth, some poop, or something else. I try to stop it as much as possible, but he's never really had tummy issues except one time but he began feeling better the next morning. I figure he's a dog, and dogs will be dogs. Usually he is smart enough to spit out the bad stuff. I caught him the other day running around with a lizard! One day he brought in a dead mouse to me, all proud. Gross.

| Well, Kayla will eat or chew on anything that doesn't eat her first. We call Kayla and Lexi (mini schnauzer) double trouble. The other nite they brought in a snake. They had brought one in the night before so there is probably a den somewhere in our back yard. Our yard is huge and I have no idea where they found them. I told my husband when they bring in the mama is when I'm running. They had just had baths too. I'm sure they rolled on it before killing it. UGH!!!! |

| Thank you for your replies. I feel better. I think he thinks its a game too. He gets something and knows he probably shouldn't have it and then the games begin. I had him going around a tree out back and I switched directions, boy that confused him. It was kind of funny and he was just stunned. He is just such a tiny thing and we are just trying to get pottying outside down and there are just so many distractions; leaves seem to be the most amazing things. By the way, I haven't actually seen him swallow anything, he just mouths it, chews on it, and then spits it out. |

| Do watch out for the mushrooms/toadstools that pop up each spring, they can be toxic if ingested...and can cause extreme hypoglycemia.

| Glad we aren't alone. This is exactly what Ginger does! As soon as she gets outside, something - ANYTHING - goes in her mouth. She also will run from me if I try to take it from her. That little stinker!
