| Kennel cough vaccine good or bad? I took my baby to get her 4th set of shots. She gained 2 oz. She now weighs 1.4pd. She is a small dog. They are going to hold off on the rabie shot until she is 2lbs. The vet wanted to know if I wanted her to have the kennel cough vac. The vet said it was good to have if she was going to the park or the groomers where there is other dogs around. We plan on grooming her ourselves and we don't live near a park so is the shot necessary? |

| I can tell you Barley had Kennel cough when I got him and it was scarry. It can turn into phenomia if left untreated. I get it for my dogs, even though I don't take them to groomers or kennel them. I'm worried that walking around they may incounter it. Just my two cents.

| If you live in a congested area or plan on taking your dog to the groomers, the vet will highly recommend it. At my groomer's it's mandatory that dogs be up-to-date on their kennel cough vaccine. As long as you have all of the facts, it's really up to you !

| Zeus just had the vaccine last week and ever since he has been making weird sneezing and coughing sounds. Not sure if it is just a cold or allergies but I have regrets for getting it. Your baby is so tiny I would wait. |

| I personally don't give it to my dogs. They don't get around strange dogs, get boarded or go to the groomers. From my understanding, immunization is only good for 6 months (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Some dogs can get kennel cough from the vaccine just as some people get the flu from the flu shot. I believe it comes in a nasal spray and as an injection and that less dogs have bad reactions to the shot compared to the spray.

It prevents some strains of KC which can turn into pneumonia and you will have to give it if you board or go to the groomer. Then again the intranasal can cause KC (said to be a mild case) and would then be able to cause pneumonia. It is highly contagious. I do not give it.

| Thank you all so much for your advice. I will probably not give it to them. I am going with my gut. |

| Kennel Cough is airborne so it doesn't really matter if they leave your property or not. I use the Nasal apray and have never had a problem. I brought a new dog in recently and he had never had the vaccine because the breeder said her dogs were never off her property. In order to protect my others, he got the vaccine the next day. Plus, I show my dogs and they are never enteered in a show until they are FULLY protected. |

| Kennel Cough Shot I spoke w/a lady, the other day, that actually works at a kennel/grooming/etc...I ask if they required bortatella shots, and she said no, but to speak w/your vet...My vet recommends bortatella shots, but then she wanted to vaccinate Apple @ 4 mo. for rabies, and I didn't agree w/that...The lady at the kennel said they don't always work, anyway...She also said that if a dog were to get it, you treat it just like you would treat the flu, and that is doesn't have to be fatal...She owns and breeds pappillions (?)...I'm, personally, not going to get it for Apple, but then a friend of mine, who grooms her own yorkies, grooms mine...I guess it's another one of those "gather all the information you can, then make a personal choice".... YT 1000 Club Member | Roxie had kennal cough to the point her vocals are scarred for life. It's nasty stuff and can last for months. I do agree with it being a personal choice weather to vaccinate for it. I'm pretty sure Roxie had the shot before we got her but yet when we got her she was a pretty sick pup. I really don't know how effective the immunization is. |
