Senior Yorkie Talker | The Butt Dance I am sure we have all witnessed our furbabies butt skooch themselves across the floor, all the while finding humor in the fact that they look robotic, as if to be suspended in air with wheels affixed to their backsides. No, this is not "The Butt Dance." It is an indication that they either have a flea in the wrong place, you have shaved their toosh hair too close, or the probable cause, their anal gland needs to be squeezed. Being that many of us groom our own dogs, and the fact that the vet will generally not squeeze the anal gland unless asked, it is very important that it be done every few months. Because our lil' ones tend to be tiny (well, except for my 10 lb. Terror), they generally lack fiber in their diet which facilitates cleansing of the colon. Their anal glands will fill and often, if not addressed, this will lead to them becoming impacted or worse, an infection. Local groomers can do this when and if you take them for grooming, or the vet during their visit. My vet also recommended one tablespoon per day of canned pumpkin to add the extra fiber. This also works well when the animal has diarrhea. A word to the wise, do not have the gland squeezed after they have had a bath. It doesn't leave their fur smelling fragrant. Good luck with your furbabies!!!... |

| No More Butt Dancing LOL Roxy did that last year when she was still eating dog food. It was hilarious at first. Since I have been home cooking, haven't seen her do it. She gets plenty of fiber- so I guess that's the trick! Great Post, Wish I could groom her, she's too frisky and I'm too nervous- I do bathe her between groomings though. |

| Is there some where to learn how to squeeze the anal glands? Doesn't sound very pleasant! |
