Marci, you've been doing this for awhile now, so am I imagining things or were there more people that used to do it on YT? Newbies are starting but where are the, well, oldies?

Well Crystal you know that I don't homecook but if the pre-made raw stopped working for my boys I would be with you in a heartbeat I can't stomach prey-model raw and just couldn't go back to kibble.

I recently consulted with a veterinary nutritionist about my lab with the severe allergies and had a diet formulated for him, but with him being 80lbs it's just not going to work. Poor guy, I would love to be able to do it but just can't

I am still homecooking for 5 of the dogs. The Beauregard FIRED me as cook and refuses to eat homecooked meals as of yesterday. I was starting to panic, but lucky for me Maggie May's mom sent me some food for Maggie May and Beauregard is chomping down. Now to find out what was in the unmarked baggie. I must head to the doggie food store

At least with real food, you know exactly what they are eating. You do not know what's in the dog kibble, or maybe you don't want to know.
Feeding a balanced meal does not mean you have to have it down to a science at every feeding. Even if you were to feed your baby oatmeal, eggs and hamburger every day, it would be healthier than feeding kibble by a long shot. I'm not saying to only feed oatmeal, eggs and hamburger every day, I'm just saying real food is better, safer and healthier and you don't have to make an exact science out of it. Give suppliments We take vitamins simply because our own eating habits are not perfect!!

I have been homecooking for about four months now. I will do it for the rest of Lady's life since she just has too many health issues now to feed a commercial diet.

The good news is that she is doing fabulously on it! No more HGE (she'd had three attacks in four months). Her insulin requirements are about half what they were on commercial diets, too. She is very enthusiastic about meal times and gobbles her food up.

Done right, it is really expensive to add all those supplements and is a lot of work. I'm not sure I would do it for a healthy dog since there are so many excellent commercial foods out there.

Right now Ellie does get homecooked (of course) but because of some medical issues, there may be a time very soon that we might have to go with a prescription diet. It is just really hard to mirror the intestinal diets like I/D, so we will see. It is very expensive compared to kibble and the better ingredients do cost quite a bit more. When you measure everything out to get the correct % of protein, fat, etc., it can be time consuming to package it.

Not sure what I'd do with a healthy Yorkie but a healthy large dog would be getting dog food. However, I take one issue or another with just about every dog food out there and I would not like feeding it.

I started feeding vegies,chicken,to my babies and they love it. Is that what you are talking about homecooking.

I have a question: on the vegies I steam them right?

Yes, that could be considered homecooking in a way but usually the term is used to mean that that is all our dogs get...people food with supplements.

Yes, you can steam the vegetables or pulverize them. You can give some of them raw but they are less digestible. Although possibly not as nutritious, they can be boiled.

If you are feeding homecooked for more than 10% of your dog's diet, supplements will need to be added and the calcium/phosphorus ratio rebalanced.

Yes, they get vitamins also every day and Jack gets cod liver oil. Bella is still not able to take it. It upsets her stomach. But they get vitamins.


will cauliflower give them gas, they are eating carrots, zucchini, green beans, mixture but it was steamed.? and can chicken

Can you list the vitamins?
Yes, they can have broccoli and cauliflower but it is possible that it will cause gastrointestinal upset. No need to avoid it though. It is recommended that broccoli be used in moderation...not all the time or in excess.

Oh, gosh, I hope you don't have to start feeding a prescription diet. I went through that seven years ago when Lady was diagnosed with diabetes and my vet recommended Hills W/D. I fed it to her for about one month until I could do a little research. It made no sense to me why you would feed an immune compromised dog all that corn and peanut hulls. I am convinced that the reason Lady has outlived all the other dogs on the diabetes forum who were diagnosed at the same time is because I did not feed her prescription food.

I really hope Ellie's nutritionist can tweak her recipe so you can continue to homecook.

Goodness Crystal I hope you don't have to put her on that either!! I just looked at the can of I/D I had in the pantry for the last year and it has Ethoxyquin in it I hope they have changed that.

Marj- that is AMAZING that Lady has done so well on homecooked!! Like I said before if the raw ever didn't work for my boys I would go to homecooked so fast.
