| When is she going to be in heat??? I am a first time yorkie owner and my little girl is 10 months old and I was wondering about when she should begin going into heat? I thought maybe she should have been by now but I'm guessing not because I'm seeing nothing out of the ordinary physically or behaviorally. What signs should I look for? Thanks!

| My baby is 10 months as well and hasn't come into heat. Her sister, however, has. The signs are moodiness and swelling of her vaginal area. She will also have a discharge. I have been told that sometimes it's hard to tell with a yorkie, however, with LuLu's sister, my friend said it was very noticeable. She said the swelling was very distinct. I hope this helps. I was at the petstore tonight and noticed that they have disposable diapers for little ones. I think I'm going to try that route if she comes in heat before I have her spayed.

| Yeah I saw those at the pet store also and I'm gonna use 'em too when the time comes. Will the swelling be noticable or would I have to actually look closer at her to find out? I don't want to miss it when it comes just because I can't tell if something's taken place. I would feel terrible for not comforting her or helping her lol. Thanks for the reply!

| Swelling on her part will be noticeable.. her nipples will also be swollen and reddish too. Mimi is 9 months and going through heat now.. i regret procrastinating her spaying.. now I have to wait till 2 more weeks for her to get spayed.. She is normal though, still active but she does not eat all her food now.. Do other yorkies not eat all their food when they are in heat? |

| Chloe hasn't had her first heat yet either . I was starting to wonder that since she is so little maybe I missed it somehow because she is 9 months old but since yours is 10 months I'm guessing she just hasn't had it yet. I was hoping to have her spayed before her first heat. Our appointment for both dogs was for next week but Sydney ( my 3 year old dog) went into heat yesterday so I will have to reschedule. I don't use the disposable diapers on Syd , she will tear them apart in minutes I use the denim washable ones with the throw away liners for her.

| My fiance doesn't want to get our girl spayed and I really don't think I have the heart to go through with that, either. What do you all recommend? What would be best for her? Also how much does it cost?

| Mika got her first heat at 10 month. Lucy was about 1 year but her first heat was a silent heat (no blood) so it is harder to tell if you don't have experience. Astra Star is only 8 months... no heat yet |

So, IMO - it's always best to spay any female, even tiny ones. Ruby was under 3lbs when she was spayed at one year old. If your girl is healthy, she should have no problems with being spayed. The cost varies from one region to another. I've noticed on the both coasts, the price is often considerably higher than other areas. Ruby's cost around $300, but that was with baby teeth removal, a full blood panel, monitoring and meds. It's common for the smaller girls to not come into heat until closer to a year and some even after one year.

| Oh Boy.... In regard to your question - You have gotten alot of good input on it. My Gracie was born March 26 last year. She started her first heat on 1/1/09. For the smaller puppies they can take up to a year.
