Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Any Yorkies allergic to feathers? Eddie has had a runny-eye problem for most of the last year. It's worse in the mornings after sleeping on our bed. He also occasionally licks his feet in bed. I'm starting to wonder if he's allergic to our feather pillows and blankets. The vet tried treating with antibiotics, but the problem returns when the medicine stops. Does anyone else have similar symptoms?

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | I know Ann (Wylie's Mom) had a problem not too long ago where...Marcel I think it was, was gasping for air in the middle of the night, and after much discussion, they attributed it to the down in her pillow or duvet. They're thinking, though, was that one of the tiny feather particles went up his little nose and cause a blockage and then after a bit it started getting damp making less of a blockage so he started breathing normally again. (I think I got that all right??) I have a down coat and noticed once that Bella seemed to honk and gasp after I had her tucked inside it to keep her out of the cold. Not sure it was something similar to Ann's issue or if maybe it was an allergy Eddie's runny eyes, etc... definitely seem to be more a sign of allergy than anything else, although I don't think an antibiotic would treat an allergy.....an antihistamine like baby Benadryl would though. It's odd to me that the antibiotic made it better and then it got worse again afterward..... Hmmm.... I know it gets super cold there, but maybe you could try using different pillows/blankets or keeping Eddie in a crate or something overnight for a couple of nights and not giving him access to your bedroom at all to see if it truly was an allergy. I don't know how else you'd know..... People are allergic to down, so I'm sure dogs can be too. Although, most down duvets/pillows will now say "hypoallergenic", but I'm not sure what that means or whether somebody who was allergic to down would have a problem with the "hypoallergenic" kind or not??

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Thanks, I'm thinking that's what I'll try. Only I'd rather take a raw bone from a rabid pitbull than take my wife's pillows and blankies away from her. I understand there's a blood test you can give them to test for allergies too. Let me know if anyone's familiar with that.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It is said that only 1% of the population is allergic to down, it's just a protein not unlike human hair, however, over time, down comforters and pillows accumulate dust, skin, and dander and this attract dust mites, and they are the cause of many allergies, specifically dust mite poop. I've heard that putting the article in a hot dryer for x amount of time will kill the mites, but don't know if that will help. There are some types of covers for pillows and comforters that are said to make them more impervious to dust.

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Lol! You may not live through that little test then The dust mite thing actually makes a LOT of sense, especially if they are not new. AND, most people only wash the covers and not the actual pillows/duvets themselves because of the down (although I have mine dry cleaned.....I think that's basically a waterless cleaning but they still get heated up--is that right?) I wonder if you could have them dry cleaned and problem solved?? Wouldn't that be great!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Good advice. Come to think of it, we've addressed the dust mite problem to a degree because my wife was having some allergy problems. We have the covers for her down blanket and pillows. And we hot-washed all the blankets and sheets a while back. Perhaps we can be a little more vigilant there. I'll try that. Thanks.

| My Buffy has sinus allergies. When she gets ear infections the eyes get running the nose and breathing thru the nose get blocked. At times its hard to tell if its an eye infection only or a sinus infection or the allergies...so when its an infection I to have treat eyes, ears and nose at the same time. Eye drops or ointment, nose drops, and ear drops and some times antibiotics for chest infection. That covers everything. If I not sure or I'm confused I take her to the vet.....he knows her so well already. But for just allergies she will take a pill for 14 days but no antibiotic..... that sounds to me like there is an infection somewhere that needs to be treat more direct. Good Luck!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali has allergies but we never could find out to what. I had the allergy blood testing done for environmental and food allergies and she didn't test positive for anything they tested for. They take the blood and send it out to a special lab and it took a week or so and I got back a complete report of what was tested for and what she scored on each one. She wasn't even close to being allergic to anything they tested. The tests ran 300.00 a couple of years. I do use feather pillows though. Hmm. Hope Eddie can get some relief.
