| The lepto vaccine has been known to kill Yorkie puppies and causes a lot of reactions. It has to be given every 9-12 months and doesn't protect against all strains. On the other hand, lepto is very dangerous. Some Yorkie breeders won't guarantee a pup that is vaccinated for this. It's really a personal choice and one that takes a lot of research. It is a non-core vaccine and there are plenty of people that say do not get it...

| I work at a vet clinic and the Dr raises yorkies, she vaccinates starting at 6 weeks and gives the Lepto--the newer lepto vaccines are safer and she's not had any reactions in the 5 years I've been here on her yorkies(we've had some dachsunds and I think a chihuahua have some facial swelling afterwards-we gave a benedryl injection and the pets were all fine-notations were made and those pets won't get lepto anymore). I would also inquire if there have been any recent diagnosis of lepto--I know we had some in our area. Also, if your pet is exposed to wildlife(raccoons and rats are big carriers), so if they get into your yard or you go hiking-your pet has a higher risk. My sister lives in the country and her dog got lepto--they tried to save him(he was a 60lb boxer), but after spending $500+ he ended up passing. |
