| Can CERENIA (anti-vomiting) FLAGYL or PEDIALYTE cause WILD BEHAVIOR? I know this is a crazy question.. but Gucci had been sick the other day and the vet gave him Cerenia for vomiting ( a shot of this ) and Flagyl to take 2 X's daily.. He was drinking Pedialyte ALL DAY yesterday and is eating a food for the intestine (vet prescribed) .. His symptoms were vomiting and yellow diarrhea with pink spots in a mucous cover... and it was runny, he did not have a fever ( he felt hot at home but once he got to the vet 6 hours later it was 3 a.m when he got ill, he was fine NO FEVER ) .. anyhow she sent him home and he has done great no vomiting, no diarrhea But he is acting WILD way more wild than usual, he is running all over in circles and hopping at things and just being WAY OVERLY PLAYFUL, last night he was up until 4 a.m and I literally had to say " THAT'S ENOUGH YOU'RE GOING TO BED " lol and put him to bed because he was just overdoing it... He is also urinating a lot, can that be because he is getting fluids every 2 hours with his food? or should I worry .. It only started when the every 2 hours started. Anyhow can any of these things I am giving him cause him to be restless and wild? He is eating IAMS VET FORMULA Intestinal Low-Residue Canned Food about 1/4 cup every 2 hours yesterday approx 2.5-3 tbs and now he has that doubled every 4 hours as directed by the vet.. is that too much? and here are the ingredients in case something in the food is making him Bonkers ... | I BELIEVE HYPERACTIVITY IS THE WORD I WAS LOOKING FOR .. I have been reading online and hyperactivity, increased urination, vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms of chocolate poisening.. I DO NOT think that GUCCI got into any chocolate as he is always supervised .. It has been over 36 hours since his symptoms started.. I am now getting worried that he could have found something on the floor in my room ( I have a 10 year old who is less than careful at times ) .. |

| CErnia Side effects are rare-the most common ones are excessive drooling, lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhea;may vomit after taking the medicine. Giving with a small amount of food will help avoid this. Remember not to wrap the tablets tightly, so they can dissolve properly. Flagyl (metronidazole)-side effects Mouth: A sharp, unpleasant metallic taste is not unusual. Furry tongue, glossitis, and sto-matitis have occurred; these may be associated with a sudden overgrowth of Candida which may occur during therapy. Hematopoietic: Reversible neutropenia (leuko-penia); rarely, reversible thrombocytopenia. Cardiovascular: Flattening of the T-wave may be seen in electrocardiographic tracings. Central Nervous System: Convulsive seizures, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, vertigo, incoordination, ataxia, confusion, irritability, depression, weakness, and insomnia. Hypersensitivity: Urticaria, erythematous rash, flushing, nasal congestion, dryness of the mouth (or vagina or vulva), and fever. Renal: Dysuria, cystitis, polyuria, incontinence, and a sense of pelvic pressure. Instances of darkened urine have been reported by approximately one patient in 100,000. Although the pigment which is probably responsible for this phenomenon has not been positively identified, it is almost certainly a metabolite of metronidazole and seems to have no clinical significance. Other: Proliferation of Candida in the vagina, dyspareunia, decrease of libido, proctitis, and fleeting joint pains sometimes resembling &ldquoserum sickness.” Rare cases of pan-creatitis, which generally abated on withdrawal of the drug, have been reported. Pedilyte----SIDE EFFECTS: A common side effect that usually goes away during treatment is mild vomiting. If it continues, call the doctor. Call the doctor immediately if any of the following effects occur: convulsions or seizures, dizziness, rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, irritability, muscle twitching, restlessness, weakness, swelling of feet or lower legs, puffy eyelids. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. I don't know too much about vet meds. the Flagyl and Pedilyte are human drugs also. The only thing that looks familiar is Flagyl-polyuria (large amounts of urine) and with Pedilyte-restlessness. I would contact your vet if the behavior continues. I maybe one of the meds but the side effects don't seem to indicate it. Maybe he just feels so much better

| I give my Bella Cerenia for her motion sickness and it has actually given her the reverse effect...she tends to be very sleepy and lathargic. However, maybe the combination of all of the meds caused Guccis reaction? Just a guess, but I definitely don't think it was the Cerenia.

| I am not sure myself I just know his behavior is extremely hyperactive compared to the norm (and he's a WILD guy normally) right now he is 12 weeks and hasn't napped since 10 this morning which is unusal for him and last night he didn't go to bed until 4 a.m , usually our bed time is 10:00. The urine is what I was most concerned about he has gone a large amount of urine 6 maybe 7 times between 12:30 and 2:52 I counted 6 but I'm not sure if he went 2X's in his house while he was in there (he usually doesn't do that) or if he just went 1 large amount. He hasn't had any fluid since 11:00 a.m.. Maybe it's incontinence combined with large amount of urine? 2 side effects being experienced? He has an appointment right now at 3:30, I figured better safe than sorry... What do you guys think .. could the above be the reason and is that abnormal for a yorkie.. I know it's certainly abnormal for a pitbull ( my other dogs) I also know it is abnormal for Gucci he goes 5 times a day Max |

| ** update on gucci ** **** UPDATE ***** So we just got back from the vet, and it appears he is just eliminating ALL the fluids he had from yesterday.. It seems I may have given him too much but HE'S FINE .. just a little pee pot right now lol.. He got his picture taken (the vet adores him) his nails trimmed.. lots of kisses from the staff and a puppy plan enrollment while we were there.. he goes back Monday for his 3rd Vaccination.. he was supposed to have it today but he wasn't feeling well so the vet didn't want to chance it. The vet mentioned the Hyperactivity could be from the large amount of Pedialyte he had.. she said it makes children restless sometimes and in a puppy she can imagine it would be exactly what Gucci was exhibiting, she also said it could be a very mild Neurological affect from the Flagyl so to take him off it and see how he does without it.. So Overall we Are happy and I am reassured and comfortable with having him pee alot lol.. thanks for those that responded I appreciate it Greatly!! |
