Is there such a thing as an autistic puppy? My 5 month old puppy does not liked to be pet! Now what puppy doesn't liked to be pet??? She will sit on my lap and when I start to pet her she moves off my lap. I want to cuddle her and she doesn't want that either. Any suggestions on how to change this?

I have a male that is 2 yrs old now and he was the same when he was a puppy. He loves to be on my lap and when he is sleeping he will let me pet him. Even when I go out and come home my other two will run to greet me and let me pet them hello, but as soon as I go to pet him he will walk away.
It's funny, but my husband has always said that Bosley Beamer was autistic.

Oh my goodness! Mine is the same way. She loves to be near me, lay on my lap, and she is very very loyal, always beside me or in the same room and she comes to greet me, BUT she does not like it when we pet her unless it is on her terms and she asks for it. If she is laying down and I start to pet her she will lift her head and tense up and eventually move away. Sometimes though, she will come to me and get in my face until I do pet her but it has to be on her terms. I sometimes wonder if they are not ticklish. We have worked with her on it though and have made her sit and take a little at a time. She is a lot better about it but you can still tell she doesn't really like it.

My male is kinda like that. He wants to be near, will follow me like a shadow, sleeps at my feet at night - but isn't much for cuddling.

I had always chalked it up to the fact that I don't think he was properly socialized as a puppy, that his breeder didn't spend enough time with the puppies like she should have.

He's playful, loves his toys and wrasslin' with his little "sister", but he's not much for cuddling unless it's on HIS terms.

I think they just have individual tastes like we do. Annie loved to be cuddled and petted, Boo too. Gracie Ruth not so much, as a young puppy she just seemed too busy "doing stuff" to be bothered with the whole petting thing. She's 10 months old now and does enjoy it more and actually seeks it out. Yogi is 4 months and although he likes it, he too is more into "doing" then cuddling. The thing I've noticed with Gracie is that she seems to struggle with static, even in the summer time. So I thought that perhaps she could feel static shocks when I stroked her and thus didn't like it. So I changed from stroking her to scratches with my finger tips and that seemed to be about the time she started coming to me for 'pets'. I don't know if that was really the difference or if she just had grown up enough to start enjoying it. But now that winter is here and between my long hair and hers the static is, well, electric in our home.

I try to use a lot of hand lotion and to touch something metal first to discharge any static I have built up. I've reached to pet one before and saw sparks jump from my hand to the tips of their ears.

ahhh, yeah, that doesn't help the whole go to Momma for some good lovin' idea.

Try different ways of 'petting' and maybe you'll come across something that she'll like.

Pita is almost 6 months old and the same way. She will only let you pet her if she feels like it; but most of the time she just wants to lay on your lap. My husband has a hard time accepting that b/c he wants to pet her, but she will try to mouth his hand if he keeps it up. I'm glad to know its not just her. Hopefully they will outgrow it.

That is so funny that you bring this subject up! When I first got Fiona, she wasn't too keen on being affectionate either, she would literally give me some love for about 2 min, and then hide under the bed....with time, and age, she is so loveable now, its shocking that it's the same puppy!!!! Just give her some time, and she'll make a turn around!

My pup is like this sometimes too. He doesn't mind getting touched so much, but if you reach down and try to pet him from a standing position he goes into evasive action.

At least when it comes to other people. He'll tolerate a lot more cuddling/petting from me than he will from others.

Either your pup will grow out of it or it's just a permanent fixture of his personality. (I think my own pup will always be semi-aloof with anyone but me.)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Pups are single-minded and their mother doesn't sit there licking and coddling them constantly, so they don't expect that treatment from their human "moms" either. They'd rather play and explore.
