Kramer has been having seperation anxiety when we leave the house, severe enough where he is hurting his teeth chewing through wood and anything else he can find. My vet reccomended putting him on anxiety pills, but I'm not a big fan of drugs, however I have heard of a product that is natural that is good for over anxious dogs. Has anyone heard of it. I have heard about it on a comercial but can't remember the name. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

There are other things you could try like kenneling him. I don't know any thing about the drugs. If you need more ideas on ways to help him with the seperation anxiety just let me know.

Does he had a sister or brother.. that seems to help as they have each other... I am not sure I would want to put him on anything..something to think about.. they are never alone when they have each other... anne

My yorkie has a severe seperation anxiety also. He is 7 months old & if i leave to go upstairs he starts barking & anxious. Alot of vets recommend things but some of them arent any good. I wouldnt give a yorkie any medications unless he really needs it. It could harm his live r or cause any other problems in the future

I would research more but anxiety pills sounds like medication & any medication on a dog should be controlled & not given all the time. Im still looking for ways to help my dog with his seperation anxiety; but when i find a way i will let you know

Keep in mind that being in a constant state of high state of anxiety is bad for a dog too, so medication may be the lesser of two evils. If your vet recommends it, it's probably worth considering.

That's what she said, its not good for him to be like that, he is tearing up his gums chewing through stuff, but I have heard of an all natural no meds version of the anxiety pills, I just can't remember the name. If anyone has heard of it please let me know.

I would try Calm Down formula or DAP dog pheremones before I would try anxiety drugs. My dog's friend has to be on Xanax and a muscle relaxant for severe separation anxiety and it zombifies him.

I think crate-training would probably help you too.

I do crate him, but when I have to leave for longer than 3 hours I can't keep him in the crate I have to let him out to use the bathroom and drink water. So that's when he decides to destroy my kitchen, that is the only place he is allowed.

Ah, gotcha. Well, in that case, I would look into the Calm Down and DAP diffuser. You can find them at Petsmart.

Start with the least invasive first. A long daily walk is a must, we have three and it helps to relieve some aggression. Our 3.5 pound Princeton can be aggresive towards his 6 pound sister - Pinky. They love it and it is good for us too! You could also try homeopathic solutions which may help mild anxiety and probably worth a try. If it is a chemical imbalance in the brain try to be open to prescrption drugs. They have helped many people and it can help to have a better quality of life for your furbaby. Constant stress is detramental to the immune system and I believe the best solution is the one that works.

I would also check out the Dog Whisperer. He has good info/advise on dealing with dogs that have anxiety problems.

Does he have something to chew (like Bully Sticks) while your gone?

He is 14 mos. he has all kinds of toys and from chew toys to stuffed toys, but for some reason when we leave the house he doesn't pay attention to any of those, just becomes destructive.
