| I tested sammy's urine this morning & it does not look good i hope something is not wrong with sammy. i tested his urine this morning. i bought the petcheckup strip kit which is a pet urine tester. most likely the same as humans, but what did i know. about 1 1/2 months ago i checked it and all it was his protein had a trace, everything else was on the charts and good. could it be i took him off the dr ptcairns healthy powder? he was itching and licking his paws , i thought it could have made him have an allergy. the itching stopped. i am so upset, please help me. i lost my dog, a mutt many years ago to kidney failure and i dont want to lose sammy. he is only 3 yrs old. anyway his test is off. his urine has always been a darker gold color and it stinks. really smells bad. he is eating normal , never has been a water drinker, but i always add water in his food. the test results are leukocyte - little darker than negative nitrate-little darker than negative urobilinogin-this was more of a yellowish color and it was not even on the charts protein-trace ph-6.5 blood-negative specific gravity-1.020 ketone-little darkerthan negative bilirubin-darker than negative glocose-negative |

| if you are concerned take a sample to vet but does not look bad to me as my girl had +30 protein in hers and normal ph is 6 correct? Maybe add some vegetables that are juiced or food processed to get more water -- do you use spring water or figi water for your baby as that may entice more water drinking. Was the bun and bun creatinine ratio high on bloodwork and is this why you are concerned? Just curious as just went through this with my girl for dental as she has periodontal disease which can affect the kidneys. Do you do annual dentals? How are the teeth and gums? |

i started doing a monthly checkup with this kit, because his urine looked a bit dark and gold. and it smells bad too., not your urine smell, worse than that. i was concerned aboutthe chart, that his readings , some were not even on it.. the color wwas not on the chart, but on the dip stick

| then maybe have it checked by vet just to be safe - take a sample in as maybe just a uti if traces of protein in it - urine should not have protein in it -- to get a clear idea of it you need to do needle catch in bladder as that checks if it is a uti or kidney probs but i personally do not like the needle in bladder idea so i take in a sample off back of wee wee pad -- i get a dropper and bottle from pharmacy for free then syringe it up off back of wee wee pad put in bottle and take immediately to vet |

what about the bilirubin, it was darker than negative? i am going to test him tomorrow morning before i bring the urine in to the vet. i am just upset that he might be sick. i was away this weekend, and my daughter watched him, and he peed on her floor and couch, which he has never done before. and the smell was so bad too

| I agree...taking a sample or letting the vet take a sample is important if you are concerned...I know what you mean about the really smelly urine. When my yorkie had urine that was like that, he usually had an issue.

| I feed all my dogs Taste of the wild. They are doing great on it. My 10 yr old Lab is healthier than he has been since he was a puppy. [ I used to feed purina YUCK! before I learned more about food] Here is a great site to help you chose a kibble: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble PS if it is UTI I have heard over and over that apple cider vinegar, a little in the water dish, will clear up the crystals and prevent UTI keep us posted! |

| PPS Make sure they always have fresh water, The dark urine could mean he is a little dehydrated. |

| First you need to go get some low sodium broth, Chicken, beef doesn't matter he needs to drink more. Maybe water it down a little. Always leave water out just incase he decides to drink it. Here is a page that has really good canned food: Dog Food Reviews - 6 Star Premium Canned Food - Powered by ReviewPost |
