				   | With feeding commercial food, getting them vaccinated and putting flea and tick meds on them, the dogs are filled with toxins. Fasting for 24 hours once a week or every two weeks is really beneficial. While fasting, they may vomit or have diarrhea or both, and is natures way of ridding the body of all the toxins that have built up. If they don't fast, the toxins continue to build up and then they start having medical problems, sometimes getting medications which are also toxic and then it just escalates from there. Feeding real food is the best and healthiest but they should still fast a couple of times a week. If you do fast, make sure bottled water is down for them day and night.

				   | Fasting... that's really funny. Meal time around here is at 7 & 4 and they start going CRAZY before dinner. The time change has got them going nuts by 2:30 now... They would never let me skip a meal and I could never live with them if I did. It's 3:56 and I already fed them they were being so obnoxious because they were hungry. Now they are fine... snuggled up and napping ![]() I do cook for them. They get Innova in the morning and 'real' food for dinner.

				   | I would like to see a link to a scientific study to say this is a beneficial thing to put your baby through >.> On the other hand - if it's no longer than 24 hours and there are no negative side effects - like vomiting or diarrhea or both ??? - then it could be ok to do and may have some physical benefits... but as I said at the start, I would like to see a study about this. I can't see it being OK for a dog to vomit and/or have diarrhea... sounds unhealthy to me. Now if the dog has allergies and you're trying to pinpoint the problem this might be useful...? But still. :/

Yes, there are many books out on this very subject if you are interested in learning about this. Two book that I do highly recommend is by Ann N. Martin, FOOD PETS DIE FOR and PROTECT YOUR PET

				   | No, Ellie isn't fasted unless the vet needs her to be or she isn't feeling well. Because of her health issues, I wouldn't even consider doing it but even with a healthy dog, I wouldn't do it either. I haven't seen any studies (links?) done that are peer-reviewed about this. I had read that some people do this, especially with large dogs but I'd have to pass. In small dogs, I'd be extremely concerned about their bodies storing up enough sugar to get them through it and it seems very unhealthy because of that.

Anyway, regarding your OP you put the idea out there but it seemed like you were telling us we should do instead of asking what we thought. If my baby doesn't seem unhealthy in any way why would I do this to him and potentially make him feel icky? If it's not broke don't fix it? Just seems excessive to me. I'd definitely have to pass on fasting. Oh, and I don't feed my baby commercial food anymore since I educated myself about the subject.

				   | There is absoltely NO reason to put your pet's body through this. All mammals have a built-in detoxifying mechanism....it's called the liver and colon. I agree you shouldn't give medication if they are vomitting, diarrhea, and fever. And I also agree that fasting is sometimes good for dogs who have diarrhea to give their digestive system a break. But that is something COMPLETELY different than fasting. Please find me a peer reviewed study that says this is a good thing. Last edited by RLC12345678; 11-17-2008 at 05:59 PM. |

Also, not eating for one day doesn't put a body into a detoxifying state. If I stopped eating for one day, my body would not detoxify; systems don't work that way. There are times when it may be appropriate to withhold food after prolonged vomiting or diarrhea - but that's completely different, and it's about allowing the system to rest, it's not about fasting. Even so, I personally have never withheld food even during those times as I find that nutritional support is key when the body is under assault, it just might be a different kind of nutrition than usual.

				   | So, why would we need to fast our dogs??? That's why they vomit/have diarrhea when they do... we don't have to fast them to get those results.

				   | I think presenting something like this as fact is REALLY dangerous.
