Amount of food for the day I realize that this all depends on the size of the dog but I was wondering how much do you feed your yorkie? Hot Rod and Maggie are 3.7 lbs and 3.0 lbs respectively. I have been feeding a total of 1/2 cup daily to each and they never finish it up. I just asked the vet yesterday about this and she said that they may only need 1/3 cup all day each. I know their stomachs are small but that just sounds like such a small amount of food. I realize that treats play into the total. What amounts do you feed your yorkies? |
Amount may depend on what you are feeding them. Check the package for recommended amount. If they don't eat it all, you can remove it or leave it unless there's a weight or health problem. Gus is 8 lbs, and I feed him 1/4 cup+ in the morning and the same amount in the evening. This is for Wellness for small breeds. |
Hmmm... I've been wondering about this too. Lily is 8 months/almost 9 pounds and eating almost a cup of puppy Wellness a day. Interested to see other replies... |
Walker is only 12 weeks old and weighs about 5 pounds but easily eats 3/4 cup a day. If we go on more then one long walk a day, he will beg for food after his usual dinner and chow that down to bring his sum total to about a cup. I know that its higher than the recommendations generally, but his ribs are still fine and he stops eating when hes no longer hungry so I'm not about to starve him.:) |
Lil' Miss Izzie at 20 mths old eats about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup a day...she is 7.5 lbs and seems to do well with that along with her daily mini carrot stick and treats :animal36 |
1/3 cup does seem awful little, especially for a full day. I don't really measure their food. I free feed mine, there's food down all day...they never gobble it up, just nibble throughout the day but I figure they're not eating any more than 1/2 cup each all day. I feed home cooking for dinner, which they gobble up, but the kibble stays down all day, I change it everyday though. I've never had a problem with any being overweight either. So I guess you should do what's best for your little ones...I'd hate to give too little and they're still running around starving. Do they still seem hungry with only having 1/2 a day? If not, I'd still give them that....1/3 seems to be not enough in an entire day. |
I feed my raw and they eat two ounces per day. When I fed kibble, it was half cup twice a day. An employee at the pet store recommended feeding 6 days and off one, better for their digestive system...not sure why? |

When Ellie was free fed kibble, she ate about 1/2 cup per day. She eats probablly over a cup of homecooked because of all the moisture. |

I homecook for mine so depending on his activity level for the day, he eats about 1.5-2 cups of homecooked a day. He stops eating when he is full so I don't have to worry about him overeating. Just have to make sure there is enough for him to eat. |

I've even tried leaving the puppy food down so Maggie can free feed and neither touches it thru out the day. She did eat her 3x when we first got her but now she's 2x a day. I've even tried to feed them at lunch and neither has any interest. Hot Rod seems fine, weight wise but Maggie is still on the small/slim side. She also will not eat unless Hot Rod is there either. She will just sit and wait until he comes into the xpen with us. lol. |

I'm curious about what you are feeding Hot Rod & Maggie? I was planning to start feeding Gus "Paul Newman's" brand, but noticed that the recommended serving was almost half that of other food. I was concerned that Gus would not get enough to feel full. |
