I have no clue how much I feed my boys because I free feed. I usually fill up their bowl twice though. And by morning I need to fill it again. So they each eat a decent sized bowl a day... I'm estimating maybe 1.5 to 2 cups per dog per day? Of course, I have gigantors for furbabies... 8 lbs and 14 lbs.

Feeding/Amount/Calories!
 
When I was feeding Eukanuba - Bennett was only picking at his food and I have a feeling his "training treats" were making up the difference. I switched to Merrick "Puppy Plate" - and he eats less but seems to be fuller. So - maybe the makeup of the food - not just amount - comes into play? Does anyone else use Merrick?

You have exactly what I was looking for - and hope I got...a big Yorkie! My last Yorkie topped out at 3 pounds and was like having a small rat in the house. This go round I looked for the biggest I could find. Bennett's parents are 5 lbs each - but at 4 months he weighs 4 lbs - while his litter mates are still about half that size! I am so happy to hear there are big, beautiful Yorkies out there!

I think that sounds about how much Chip weighed at that age... of course, you never know because each york is different, but Chip ended up being 8-9 lbs. I love my big babies! When I was first looking for a yorkie, I was looking for a "teacup" (I know there is no such thing, but I didn't know that then), but I couldn't be happier with my little monsters.

Hot Rod is 14 mos and is on Innova Adult; Maggie is 6 mos today and is on Innova Puppy. I have to monitor their eating because each of them try to each the others food all the time. :eek:

when we were talking about getting a dog, we wanted to get a smaller one, or two since we would be boating with them. We had no idea that we'd wind up with 3 lbers! We just assumed that a small dog meant about 10lbs. Surprise!

Also, Hot Rod and Maggie are 1/2 to 1/3 weight of Gus and getting the same amount of food (although they don't eat it all) as him so I'm guessing a 1/3 cup may be okay.

:D Very funny. Particularly, since my two guys are heavy, and I want my next Yorkie to be under 5 lbs. I'm currently considering a 3 pounder, but I don't know if the rat analogy is a plus or a minus.

In my case the rat analogy was a minus. But, at that time, I had children in the house! And, when Sampson got seriously ill - the vet said trying to find a vein for an IV was like trying to thread a needle! So - my own particular preference was bigger. But - they are all cuties!

That sounds about right to me, my 5 month old puppy is a little under 3 pounds and he eats about 1/4 to a 1/3 cup of food a day + treats. His treats are small as well, when i first brought him home he seemed to like my Cat's food a lot and since at first he was not eating my Vet recommended blending some of the cat food with his food now he just eats his food but i give him a morsel of cat food as his treat.

I don't think 1/3 of a cup for a 3 lb dog per day is out of line. At least not with good quality food. Mine are 6-7 lbs and each eat 1/4 cup at dinner and about 1/8 cup at breakfast and are not skinny by any stretch. I often look at their food and feel like it just can't be enough but they don't lose weight so I think it's just fine.

I free feed my 5 dogs and fill 2 bowls up a day. They all nibble when hungry

Thanks. So far they still have yet to finish a serving. I tried the 1/3 cup in 2 feedings (for each) and they still left some in the bowl. Maggie was 3 lbs this morning at the vet, the same as 2 mos ago so she has neither gain nor loss weight. :confused: I guess it's okay.

I didn't start measuring until recently. I noticed that Cricket was putting on weight, and don't want her to be unhealthy, since she's been spayed. When we had our dalmation spayed, she packed on the pounds, and she was pretty big most of her adult life.
So with Cricket pudging out, I decided to watch more carefully what they eat. The big girls, who are just over 8 lbs, get about 1/2 to 2/3 cup a day, split into two meals. Roxy doesn't have weight issues, so if she is sneaking Zacchie's food, I know she's hungry, and give her a little more.
Zaccheus, on the other hand, is much smaller, and since I worry about blood sugar issues, he has free access to food at all times. I don't know how much he eats in a day, because I never let his bowl get empty.

I'm curious - and it may be in a previous thread. How old is Maggie that she hasn't gained any weight? The vet thinks Bennett had a growth spurt and will stop growing. (He's perfect no matter what!) But, I do wonder as with children - do some Yorkies just reach their adult weight/height earlier. Bennett is 4 lbs at 4 months but both parents only weigh 5 lbs fully grown. What do you think?
