Amount of food for the day

I realize that this all depends on the size of the dog but I was wondering how much do you feed your yorkie?

Hot Rod and Maggie are 3.7 lbs and 3.0 lbs respectively. I have been feeding a total of 1/2 cup daily to each and they never finish it up. I just asked the vet yesterday about this and she said that they may only need 1/3 cup all day each.

I know their stomachs are small but that just sounds like such a small amount of food. I realize that treats play into the total. What amounts do you feed your yorkies?

bildio 11-08-2008 02:11 PM

Amount may depend on what you are feeding them. Check the package for recommended amount. If they don't eat it all, you can remove it or leave it unless there's a weight or health problem.

Gus is 8 lbs, and I feed him 1/4 cup+ in the morning and the same amount in the evening. This is for Wellness for small breeds.

LaurenThig 11-08-2008 02:41 PM

Hmmm... I've been wondering about this too. Lily is 8 months/almost 9 pounds and eating almost a cup of puppy Wellness a day. Interested to see other replies...

duckie215 11-08-2008 03:36 PM

Walker is only 12 weeks old and weighs about 5 pounds but easily eats 3/4 cup a day. If we go on more then one long walk a day, he will beg for food after his usual dinner and chow that down to bring his sum total to about a cup. I know that its higher than the recommendations generally, but his ribs are still fine and he stops eating when hes no longer hungry so I'm not about to starve him.:)

SweetPea53 11-08-2008 03:39 PM

Lil' Miss Izzie at 20 mths old eats about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup a day...she is 7.5 lbs and seems to do well with that along with her daily mini carrot stick and treats :animal36

LuvmyYorkies2 11-08-2008 03:49 PM

1/3 cup does seem awful little, especially for a full day. I don't really measure their food. I free feed mine, there's food down all day...they never gobble it up, just nibble throughout the day but I figure they're not eating any more than 1/2 cup each all day. I feed home cooking for dinner, which they gobble up, but the kibble stays down all day, I change it everyday though. I've never had a problem with any being overweight either. So I guess you should do what's best for your little ones...I'd hate to give too little and they're still running around starving. Do they still seem hungry with only having 1/2 a day? If not, I'd still give them that....1/3 seems to be not enough in an entire day.

robintaff 11-08-2008 04:22 PM

I feed my raw and they eat two ounces per day. When I fed kibble, it was half cup twice a day. An employee at the pet store recommended feeding 6 days and off one, better for their digestive system...not sure why?

Do you mean feed them for 6 days and then fast them on the 7th? I had read that once but would like to see some scientific evidence to back it up before I'd ever consider it. I imagine that would be very terrible for a Yorkie's sugar levels and would not recommend it.

When Ellie was free fed kibble, she ate about 1/2 cup per day.
She eats probablly over a cup of homecooked because of all the moisture.

Let's see, Hot Rod is 14 mos and is just about half Lil' Miss Izzie's weight so I guess 1/3 cup wouldn't be out of the questions. We try to walk about 1/2 to 3/4 mile each day but lately with the weather we've not been able to. I do give treats thru out the day too. hmmm.

Potter 11-08-2008 05:46 PM

I homecook for mine so depending on his activity level for the day, he eats about 1.5-2 cups of homecooked a day. He stops eating when he is full so I don't have to worry about him overeating. Just have to make sure there is enough for him to eat.

I use a 1/4 cup measure in the containers to scoop with so that's how I know how much they are getting. It is rare that they eat the whole thing. At dinner I guesstimate the measuring with what is left in the dish and they still (usually) don't finish what is in the bowl.

I've even tried leaving the puppy food down so Maggie can free feed and neither touches it thru out the day. She did eat her 3x when we first got her but now she's 2x a day. I've even tried to feed them at lunch and neither has any interest. Hot Rod seems fine, weight wise but Maggie is still on the small/slim side. She also will not eat unless Hot Rod is there either. She will just sit and wait until he comes into the xpen with us. lol.

How old and how much did Ellie May weigh when you were feeding her kibble?

It seemed to be about a 1/2 cup and she was about 5 pounds at age 5 or so.

thanks. after reading these, maybe 1/3 cup isn't out of line. Hot Rod is very muscular and firm and you can see indentation. Maggie still has puppy fat but she is thinning out and has grown taller. I think I'll still offer more food just in case they may want to eat more.

bildio 11-09-2008 04:13 AM

I'm curious about what you are feeding Hot Rod & Maggie?

I was planning to start feeding Gus "Paul Newman's" brand, but noticed that the recommended serving was almost half that of other food. I was concerned that Gus would not get enough to feel full.

Ashley V 11-09-2008 04:59 AM

I have no clue how much I feed my boys because I free feed. I usually fill up their bowl twice though. And by morning I need to fill it again. So they each eat a decent sized bowl a day... I'm estimating maybe 1.5 to 2 cups per dog per day? Of course, I have gigantors for furbabies... 8 lbs and 14 lbs.

yorkietalker 11-09-2008 05:52 AM

Feeding/Amount/Calories!

When I was feeding Eukanuba - Bennett was only picking at his food and I have a feeling his "training treats" were making up the difference. I switched to Merrick "Puppy Plate" - and he eats less but seems to be fuller. So - maybe the makeup of the food - not just amount - comes into play? Does anyone else use Merrick?

yorkietalker 11-09-2008 05:59 AM

You have exactly what I was looking for - and hope I got...a big Yorkie! My last Yorkie topped out at 3 pounds and was like having a small rat in the house. This go round I looked for the biggest I could find. Bennett's parents are 5 lbs each - but at 4 months he weighs 4 lbs - while his litter mates are still about half that size! I am so happy to hear there are big, beautiful Yorkies out there!

I think that sounds about how much Chip weighed at that age... of course, you never know because each york is different, but Chip ended up being 8-9 lbs. I love my big babies! When I was first looking for a yorkie, I was looking for a "teacup" (I know there is no such thing, but I didn't know that then), but I couldn't be happier with my little monsters.

Hot Rod is 14 mos and is on Innova Adult; Maggie is 6 mos today and is on Innova Puppy. I have to monitor their eating because each of them try to each the others food all the time.

when we were talking about getting a dog, we wanted to get a smaller one, or two since we would be boating with them. We had no idea that we'd wind up with 3 lbers! We just assumed that a small dog meant about 10lbs. Surprise!

Also, Hot Rod and Maggie are 1/2 to 1/3 weight of Gus and getting the same amount of food (although they don't eat it all) as him so I'm guessing a 1/3 cup may be okay.

:D Very funny. Particularly, since my two guys are heavy, and I want my next Yorkie to be under 5 lbs. I'm currently considering a 3 pounder, but I don't know if the rat analogy is a plus or a minus.

Rat Analogy!

In my case the rat analogy was a minus. But, at that time, I had children in the house! And, when Sampson got seriously ill - the vet said trying to find a vein for an IV was like trying to thread a needle! So - my own particular preference was bigger. But - they are all cuties!

That sounds about right to me, my 5 month old puppy is a little under 3 pounds and he eats about 1/4 to a 1/3 cup of food a day + treats. His treats are small as well, when i first brought him home he seemed to like my Cat's food a lot and since at first he was not eating my Vet recommended blending some of the cat food with his food now he just eats his food but i give him a morsel of cat food as his treat.

Dawn125 11-09-2008 06:11 PM

I don't think 1/3 of a cup for a 3 lb dog per day is out of line. At least not with good quality food. Mine are 6-7 lbs and each eat 1/4 cup at dinner and about 1/8 cup at breakfast and are not skinny by any stretch. I often look at their food and feel like it just can't be enough but they don't lose weight so I think it's just fine.

manolos mom 11-10-2008 07:31 AM

I free feed my 5 dogs and fill 2 bowls up a day. They all nibble when hungry

Thanks. So far they still have yet to finish a serving. I tried the 1/3 cup in 2 feedings (for each) and they still left some in the bowl. Maggie was 3 lbs this morning at the vet, the same as 2 mos ago so she has neither gain nor loss weight. I guess it's okay.

I didn't start measuring until recently. I noticed that Cricket was putting on weight, and don't want her to be unhealthy, since she's been spayed. When we had our dalmation spayed, she packed on the pounds, and she was pretty big most of her adult life.
So with Cricket pudging out, I decided to watch more carefully what they eat. The big girls, who are just over 8 lbs, get about 1/2 to 2/3 cup a day, split into two meals. Roxy doesn't have weight issues, so if she is sneaking Zacchie's food, I know she's hungry, and give her a little more.
Zaccheus, on the other hand, is much smaller, and since I worry about blood sugar issues, he has free access to food at all times. I don't know how much he eats in a day, because I never let his bowl get empty.

yorkietalker 11-10-2008 03:12 PM

I'm curious - and it may be in a previous thread. How old is Maggie that she hasn't gained any weight? The vet thinks Bennett had a growth spurt and will stop growing. (He's perfect no matter what!) But, I do wonder as with children - do some Yorkies just reach their adult weight/height earlier. Bennett is 4 lbs at 4 months but both parents only weigh 5 lbs fully grown. What do you think?
