| My yorkie throws up a lot, and I'm switching to raw! Hello everyone, I've been reading threads for several days now and there is so much useful information here! I love it! I have a 5 month old little girl that they suspected had a liver problem when she was younger and stopped eating...I had rushed her to the EV and they at first thought severe sugar drop...but she didn't pop out of it after they administered fluids and glucose, so they knew it was something more serious. After a battery of tests and 3 days at the vet, she came home and I syringe fed her for 2 weeks every 2-3 hours. At the end of the 2 weeks she was eating it off herself and after that I was able to put it in her bowl and she would eat well. She seemed to be doing 100% better, so we did a bile acid test to check her liver function, and everything came back wonderful within normal limits, as did all her bloodwork, urine test, xrays, etc. She appeared to be over whatever it was and I was told to just keep an eye on her. Ever since then I have noticed that she throws up a little yellow bile after drinking a lot of water or eating, but no food ever comes up, just liquid. She digests the food properly and has normal stools, no head pressing or lethargy, no depression or any other signs of a liver shunt...only the gagging and spit up. My vet doesn't want to repeat any tests on her until she's 6 months old, and then he can redo everything and if it all turns up well, do her rabies and spay at that age too. She is 2 lbs, 6 ounces. She has gained almost a whole pound since her incident at a younger age...so I think that's pretty normal. My vet and I are both suspicious that her vomiting may be a result of acid reflux. Some days she doesn't eat as well as others, and some days she pigs her food. She has remained on the thinner side throughout everything, she did gain the weight but she got longer and taller...so I hate it when she doesn't eat much on a particular day...usually I can give her pepto and a little yogurt or whipped cream and she feels better and eats. It's almost like the lining of her tummy is just irritated some days. I have been reading a lot on here about your discussions about raw, and I have decided to try it with her. I purchased some NV tonight, beef and chicken medallions. I have two questions: Do you think the raw will improve her tummy symptoms? And about how much should I be giving her per day if I'm trying to space it out and do several small meals? I know the bag says 4-5 medallions for a 10 lb dog, so she would be close to 1/4 of that since she is almost 2 1/2 lbs. So should I cut one medallion into 4 pieces and give her 1/4 of it 4 times per day? Should I give her any treats or snacks in between or will she not be hungry? I don't want to do anything to further irritate her tummy. Thank you!! |

To answer your question, it is difficult to say if raw will help her tummy - it just can't be predicted. I'm not the biggest fan of trying new diets when a dog's health is a bit questionable. But, you have to be the judge of how stable your baby feels/seems. Don't go by what's on the bag - go to naturesvariety.com and use the feeding guide - enter in your baby's info. The result you'll get will be the total oz. per day - so divide that by how many meals you'd like to give (1 medallion is 1 oz.). Treats in btwn is fine if you think she needs them; given her upset tummy, I'd be prone to see how she does getting some carby things in btwn meals such as a bit of cracker, or some carby dog treat (but healthy) - the carb may help absorb some tummy juices. Btw, NV also makes a FREEZE DRIED raw - and often times I think this is a good option for transitioning dogs to raw if the dog is having some issues (rather than going straight to raw). So, just something to think about - it's more expensive, but you only use 1 bag for a transition.

| Yes just the tummy and it is almost like just a spit up, not full vomiting. She is still able to keep the food down well. I thought I would switch her to this since I've heard such good things and then when they retest her in another month see how her health has improved. If she shows any signs of going backwards I will definitely switch back to dry kibble. Thank you! |

| We have to give Finnigan a 1/4 tablet of Famotidine (Pepcid) every morning for his acid reflux. He would have the same kind of yellowish vomit here and there and then would have bouts of horrible vomiting for a full day every once in awhile. After several rushes to the vet/bloodwork, nausea medicine... acid reflux was the diagnosis. Now that we do the Pepcid he's rarely sick anymore. Still has some days, but I'm thinking after narrowing down possible causes that a bacon treat may be to blame for his bad days now.
