I got their teeth cleaned by the vet...Now What??!!
 
I took Hootie and Hobbs to the vet today to have their teeth professionally cleaned. Now, what can I do so I never have to do this again?? :rolleyes: What is the best at-home maintenance program for their teeth?? :confused:

a lot of people use petzlife gel and spray which is suppose to be really good if you use it every day. you can also purchase and enzymatic tooth paste from the vet or the pet store to use as well. chewing helps keep their teeth clean too.

I just had Mo's teeth cleaned and I am determined to keep them that way but try as I might, I can't get them brushed. I want to try and get a finger type brush, I think I might have more control over that. I have to do something and soon or I am going to be back where we started. He had 9 teeth pulled (all of his fronts)

I feed raw and that has helped immensely!! Wylie's teeth changed a ton. I don't brush (I know :rolleyes:), but I give the boys lots of bully sticks and chews - and it seems to keep their teeth in really good shape. Raw meaty bones would be good, or large non-consumable bones.

I recently saw these and they looked interesting: BREATH-LESS Brushless Toothpaste, Ark Naturals Natural Products For Pets

OH! And pull toys w/ strings on the end might help for flossing/cleaning. :)

I Had Pixie's cleaned in June and I wipe them every day with dental wipes and brush a few times a week and was using Petzlife and they are already starting to look a little yucky.

i just checked out that link and googled it as well. i wonder if anyone here has used these and seen results. i wonder if they work

Where do you get the Dental Wipes? Do you have a link of what they are?

Me too -- I wish they had some sort of "proof" or a paper or something on their website that showed efficacy. They contain enzymes and all sorts of stuff, but who knows if they really work?

I just got back from the vet and he told me that most of the dental problems in these little guys stem from the PH balance of their saliva. I'll be the raw diet changes the ph and therefore helps with dental problems...

Of course chewing on bones and stuff makes a huge difference but I think it really makes a lot of sense.

Your vet didn't give you a protocol to follow?
Did he/she start OraVet?

We brush almost everyday with CET vanilla-mint toothpaste (some vets consider toothpaste worthless because dogs already have stronger enzymes in their mouths but I like it). We floss once or twice a week and use OraVet once a week. Ellie doesn't chew on any bones, bullies or any of that. She can't have high protein chews or beef based products and most of that stuff carries way too much of an obstruction hazard. She does get raw vegetables. Her teeth were cleaned a year ago and are still pretty nice. I would like to add more "safe" things to her protocol to avoid dentals altogether and maybe that could be accomplished by brushing after every meal. We might try that soon.:)

The vet didn't give me anything for maintenance. What's OraVet?

I highly recommend Cool and Clear Dental care. You just keep a capful in their water. you can use this along with what ever dental care you want to use. I personally just use this as mine will not let me brush their teeth.

My favorite testimonial is a 6 yr old yorkie had never had her teeth cleaned or brushed. Her teeth were covered in brown tartar. Her owner started using this and this only, and after 6 months the tartar was disappearing and it faded to a light brown stain. After 6 more months the stain was completely gone and her teeth were white.

I think since you just had their teeth done that this would be an AWESOME preventative for their teeth.

It is a plaque prevention gel (wax) made by Merial. It is applied once a week but the first application is done under anesthesia, so it is too late.

How long does one bottle last? My only problem is that I have 4 dogs, two of which are labs so my dogs go through a LOT of water in a day. I think this is a great idea, but I don't want to spend a fortune on it since my dogs go through a lot of water. Do you have any discounts for buying in bulk?
