I got their teeth cleaned by the vet...Now What??!! I took Hootie and Hobbs to the vet today to have their teeth professionally cleaned. Now, what can I do so I never have to do this again?? What is the best at-home maintenance program for their teeth?? |
a lot of people use petzlife gel and spray which is suppose to be really good if you use it every day. you can also purchase and enzymatic tooth paste from the vet or the pet store to use as well. chewing helps keep their teeth clean too. |
I just had Mo's teeth cleaned and I am determined to keep them that way but try as I might, I can't get them brushed. I want to try and get a finger type brush, I think I might have more control over that. I have to do something and soon or I am going to be back where we started. He had 9 teeth pulled (all of his fronts) |

I recently saw these and they looked interesting: BREATH-LESS Brushless Toothpaste, Ark Naturals Natural Products For Pets OH! And pull toys w/ strings on the end might help for flossing/cleaning. :) |
I Had Pixie's cleaned in June and I wipe them every day with dental wipes and brush a few times a week and was using Petzlife and they are already starting to look a little yucky. |

I just got back from the vet and he told me that most of the dental problems in these little guys stem from the PH balance of their saliva. I'll be the raw diet changes the ph and therefore helps with dental problems... Of course chewing on bones and stuff makes a huge difference but I think it really makes a lot of sense. |
I get them at Petsmart. |
Your vet didn't give you a protocol to follow? Did he/she start OraVet? We brush almost everyday with CET vanilla-mint toothpaste (some vets consider toothpaste worthless because dogs already have stronger enzymes in their mouths but I like it). We floss once or twice a week and use OraVet once a week. Ellie doesn't chew on any bones, bullies or any of that. She can't have high protein chews or beef based products and most of that stuff carries way too much of an obstruction hazard. She does get raw vegetables. Her teeth were cleaned a year ago and are still pretty nice. I would like to add more "safe" things to her protocol to avoid dentals altogether and maybe that could be accomplished by brushing after every meal. We might try that soon.:) |

I highly recommend Cool and Clear Dental care. You just keep a capful in their water. you can use this along with what ever dental care you want to use. I personally just use this as mine will not let me brush their teeth. I now sell it on my website Clothes, Beds, Healthy Food, Treats,
Grooming Products and Dental Care
for your Furbaby! | Pooch Potato Beds, Life's Abundance Pet foods, Dental Care My favorite testimonial is a 6 yr old yorkie had never had her teeth cleaned or brushed. Her teeth were covered in brown tartar. Her owner started using this and this only, and after 6 months the tartar was disappearing and it faded to a light brown stain. After 6 more months the stain was completely gone and her teeth were white. I think since you just had their teeth done that this would be an AWESOME preventative for their teeth. |

Just spent $1000 on Roxy's dental cleaning.... I went to a Board Cert. Dental Vet. She had a cleaning and unfortunately had to have 5 teeth pulled, she had decidgerous that had to be drained as well. It has been a month and she has recovered very well.... Here is the low down on the dental products. Petzlife's active ingredient is 40 Proof (grain alcohol). He said the company really has claims that are just too good to be true....It would be great if there was a quick fix like that, but there simply isn't. Enzymatic tooth paste - These are not as strong has what the dog already has in its mouth, so these do not provide any 'better' than toothpaste without them. He said there is only 1 chemical that is strong enough to fight bacteria, tartar and plaque....Of course I can not remember 'exact' - it was something like Clorohydrogen (something along those lines). And it is very difficult to get that chemical effectively into a toothpaste. But he is working with a team of scientists and they almost have a finished product. He said the BEST defence is Daily Brushing and the spin brushes are even better. ~ I brush Roxy's teeth after each meal (2x a day) and it could be more, if she decided to eat poop again! |

The bottle is big. I have alot of dogs drinking it and it lasts me. The only discount I can give is ordering it on auto ship which will save you $2.65 a bottle. But it really does last me. And I have quite a few drinking ;) |
I know how you feel with the dental bill, JD has had his cleaned 3 times, and he's 9 years old.. must admit I don't do a job of cleaning them.. the last time he lost a few teeth.. had a gum infection, and anemic. poor boy, heard Yorkie's are famous for bad teeth.. mine doesn't like any bones of any kind, nor toys, only yorkie I've had that's been this way!! |
I only give the pups hard food and chewie veggies and I usually brush their teeth once a week at bath time. Ooh and two or three times a week I put liquid dental cleaner in their water. I can't remember the name right now but I get it at petco..I have seen it also at most other pet stores. |

I think Chlorhexadine is an Anti-microbial, but maybe someone else can either support or refute that....?? I used a Chlorhexadine soap after a kitted I had long ago got ring worm. And I know some other YT'ers use it in different forms for different things....I think they have a shampoo form too?? |

We need to know these things.:) |

The vet gave it to me to scrub the broken hair follicles where the kitten's ring worm was. He said the ringworm's eggs (maybe? I think that's right) get in the broken off hair and that they're the hardest part to get rid of. I had to do that every day plus use lamisil after dosing her with oral diflucan didn't work. :( It was not much fun.... So, apparently Chlorhexadine kills bacteria and fungi too. I think it basically kills whatever germs of any kind are there. |

it is chlorhexedine as they use that to help figth gum disease and it is a gel and i will be using it - also there are chews with it in it. There is a mini tooth brush cet sells now as well - i will need to brush twice a day now as demi has periodontal disease :( We are having her teeth pulled and cleaning thursday with board certified and he did not like petzlife gel either as he stated there are no medical studies done on it. I will advise once i get all the info from him |
