Liquid Diets, Any Suggestions?

Crystal, I don't have any advice, but send prayers that Ellie is doing better. I just noticed this thread, and realized that while you have been helping me thru Tiki's liver issues you have had your own crisis with Ellie. You YT groupies are amazing in sharing your knowledge and your furbabies are so lucky to have such caring conscientious mommies. Get well little Ellie!

Ellie is doing okay right now.
Thankfully we have her issues under control somewhat.

Soft stool didn't go away after switching to a bla diet and then fasting her for over 24 hours. Fecal and giardia test normal. Vet put her on Metronidazole. Ellie had a couple soft stools throughout but the Metro did seem to really help. Came off of it Sunday and by Monday it was soft again. Tried canned pumplin...she went a few hours later and it was worse than before I gave it. She was definately better than before taking the Metro but stools were a bit wet and just weren't quite right. Vet said 30 days of Metro. It did help and she is hoping Ellie just needs a bit more time on it. If that doesn't work she said try the fish diet (from Ann's nutritionist) but don't do at the same time so we know what is working. If nothing works she will strongly push me to do a biopsy because prednizone (or in Ellie's case there is another one that I won't attempt to spell that is better for the liver) may need to be given in some cases of IBD and if there is an underlying disease like cancer, this would be the wrong thing to do.

Then she said maybe I should try probiotics because it isn't going to hurt anything. So we will.

So, now we have a month's worth of Metro (59 more doses to go) and I really don't like this drug long-term.

I should probably also try milk thistle because it would be good for her liver, pancreas and intestines but I think we need to do it when she comes off the Metro to see what is working.

Crystal - we just had a consultation with Susan Davis, the pet nutritionist yesterday. She was wonderful. I think you would get a wealth of information from her. The fish diet is slight different for each dog as she really goes over your lab values and other issues. So, I wouldn't arbitratily use another diet that has been recommended. For example, with Lauren and Mango, she is to give 4 oz of white fish daily along her her specific potato/veggie mixture as Mango needs to gain some weight. But for Sissy, our veggie mixture is less specific and she should only get 2-3 oz of white fish with it. And because Sissy is a-symptomatic, she can start on a rotation diet immediately. She spoke about pumpkin and IBD and if Ellie is not digesting fiber well, the pumpkin will go right through her also. She has a great probiotic on her site as well as a liver formula and a supergreen food that is highly recommended for liver and bowel issues. I'm telling you it was the best $78 yet spent.
