I am very very interested in the acid reflux info. What makes you think she has it and I would love to hear what the vet says. I think Desiree has it and now I think she has ulcers. She's also a worrier.
The tear duct thing is interesting. How big are the ones with the problem and how big are the ones without it? My two both have it and it's constant. The smaller 2 3/4 lb one's face gets so crusty along that path of the tears that you'd swear she had a stick stuck in her hair. The bigger one at 3 1/4 lb, hers runs all day as long as she's active.
I was told by a groomer that they sweat from the bridge of their nose, maybe it is accurate because it always gets more severe when they are running around like crazy.
I posted that before asking if anyone else heard it. But no one replied. | Took my baby to the vet today (3.8 lbs!...by the growth chart she's still on target for 4.5-5 lbs as an adult just as she's always been....if that thing is right anyway??).
I think I'm going to try the distilled water thing....it's so cheap, it's worth a try! But, I think I'll probably need to to try Eye Cleanse....I've noticed that the lighter hair around her eyes/nose that gets the tears (she's still in the process of changing colors) is sort of pinkish, so I'm guessing she may have the red bacteria stuff. I've tried Angel's Eyes, but it's smells so awful to me!!! And, since she only eats dry food, I have to give her something extra/different to mix it in every day. I think the Eye Cleanse will work better for me....
As far as the acid reflux goes, the vet asked me about how she eats....which is that I free feed (I measure it out every day so I know how much she has eaten at the end of the day, but I leave it all day) because otherwise she wouldn't eat at all. Sometimes she eats in the morning, but more often than that, she chooses to only eat at night. He said that she'd probably grow out of the reflux, but that right now she's doing it because her stomach is empty so the acid builds up. Plus when she's excited and pants or plays hard and is "breathing a lot", she swallows air. When the air makes it's way out, a little acid from the stomach comes with it. He suggested, if possible, to make sure she eats tiny bits all day (even if it's tiny "treats") if she isn't eating voluntarily, so that she'll have something on her stomach. He said if we're unable to do that, or if she continues doing it even with the tiny bits all day, to give her 1/4 of a children's Pepcid complete daily or even 1/4 of a children's Tums or Maalox (but he thinks the Pepcid complete works the best). He also said not to use Pepto Bismol in small breed dogs (I can't remember why he said not to!!! But, he said it's ok in larger breeds, but it's not a good idea in smaller breeds.) AND he said that one of the acid reducers (I think he said Prilosec??) has caused some dogs to have diarrhea and vomiting. He also said that he just scoped a dog this week that had acid reflux (and had it for ~4 years now), along with lots of vomiting too, but that dog was fine as far as erosion (ulcers) goes. I talked to him about my acid reflux and said I was worried about the same implications in her, but he said that acid reflux in dogs is a much more elaborate process and doesn't cause problems for them in the same way as it does humans.
Hope sharing that info helps! |
