| Honking Yorkie! Illy has been "honking" quite frequently the past couple of days. Last night she woke me up numerous times with the honking. She has always done it when she gets really excited, but never any other time. I called the vet and he said it could be Kennel Cough or a collapsed trachea! She is up to date on all her vaccinations and she has only been around my uncle's 2 dogs. I really hope it's not the trachea thing! Has anyone dealt with either of these conditions?

I would take her in and have the vet check her out and make sure it's not anything more serious, but alot of Yorkies do the honking and/or reverse sneezing.

| Does you Yorkie reich after honking some? It could be alergies or a mild case of kennel cough. Kennel cough if like a cold is to humans and it is everywhere, even with all the med's dogs and puppies can still catch it from other dogs. |

| It could be kennel cough, which does tend to be a little worse at night. Miles had it for the first month I had him, and he would always wake up in the night making the "honking" noise. I would get it checked out just to be sure. Good luck! |

| x-rays Yes my little 1 year old does that. At first I had no clue what he was doing and then he kept doing it more and more, and he did it to the point where he would just stand there and cough for a couple seconds. I took him to the vet and they said the same, kennel cough or a Collapsed Trachea. He gave me some antioboics and some cough medicine to go home, the antiboics helped but didnt make it go away, The cough med helps a little as well. So they said the only way to really know is to do xrays. So we did the xrays and they say everything looks ok. I do keep him on cough medicine and when he coughs more than 2 times a day I will give him some, The Doc said to give him the cough med 2 times a day even if he doesnt cough but i dont think i should drug my baby if i dont have to. So if i were you i would go get some xrays. Thats the only way to really find out, and if your baby does have a Collapsed Trachea the only cure is cough medicine, well thats what they told me look at some websites and so some research on it!! if you have any other questions feel free to ask me!! here is a website to start you off Collapsed Trachea|Small Dog Throats Collapsed Trachea in Dogs the cough med does get spendy well at least for my vet if you want to wait a little on the xray you can give your baby some robitussin dm, the over the counter cough medicine for humans you can give dogs that as well thats what the vet recomened me if i didnt want to pay for his cough medicine. oh it also helps when they are coughing like that is to rub his throat up and down until they stop, i do that everytime for peanut and i think it helps and calms him down. GOOD LUCK!!! hope it all works out |
