| Please help...can I give Benadryl along with Temeril P until the itching lets up My poor baby went to the vet today for a bad rash and excessive itching...shes had similar problems before but a little Temeril P usually help and it goes away for awhile. I havent yet tried allergy testing as it is really expensive and no one around here does it. This is the second time the rash has been this bad. My heart breaks for her...she cant lie still for more than a few minutes without biting at her but or scratching herself. I really dont like this vet that much...she isnt the regular vet but since they saw us at the last minutre today...its hard to complain. She actually had few answers for me and wasnt even going to give me medications...i had to ask for Temeril P...she said I could just give Benadryl. I tried that last night and it didnt help at all. She gave me the Temeril P and I asked if it was okay if she needed it if she could have Bendryl too...she said it was okay but most dogs dont need it too. Well she had it 4 hrs ago and is still miserable. The things I read on Temeril say it is an antihistamine also so Im a little worried about giving Benadryl too. Im sure the vet, even if I dont like her wouldnt tell me anything bad for her, but just wondered if anyone has ever given both of these drugs at once. |

| I wouldn't give the two together, but I'm certain that alternating between the Temeril P and Benadryl would likely be of benefit to your baby.... How often do you normally give the dosages of either? (for example, if you're only giving the Temeril, how often do you give it?)

| I normally would not give both at the same time. In the past, the Temeril usually works by itself. Its not working yet and she seems so miserable. The vet said it was okay and I asked twice just to clarify, but obviousl I am nervous about it. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | If both of the meds are antihistamines...the maximum dosage is the concern...it is not that the two drugs will interact in any other manner. Some antihistamines work for some dogs and/or people and some do not. You don't want her to stay on the same one continuelly because eventually she will build up a tolerance to it and it'll become ineffective.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm, just bc the vet said it was "okay" doesn't mean it will actually work better. Some drugs are potentiators of other drugs. For example, if you have a headache - it's great to take caffeine w/ aspirin bc caffiene potentiates the effect of the aspirin = headache gone quicker (plus caffeine works nicely w/ vasoconstriction too ). The point is, I don't know if Temaril and Benadryl actually potentiate each other, "act" as a stronger anti-H if taken together, or do absolutely nothing beneficial therapeutically if taken together - and if your vet can't actually answer that question, that's when you have to call a pharmacist or 1800 PETMEDS (or whatever) and see how taking those 2 drugs together would work (or not work).

| My Yorkie, Bella is currently taking Temeril-P along with Benadryl. I double checked with the Vet several times and she assured me that it was very safe & that they actually worked well together. She hasn't had any problems with taking them both, I do think it has helped her to feel better. I just wish her allergies would clear up so I could take her off of the medicine all together! |
