Spaying Preparations...advice I have read wonderful tidbits   on getting our girls spayed, but was hoping to get all my information (and more) on one thread. For those of you that have gone through spaying, please pass on any advice you might have. So far I like the idea of a onesie instead of the horrid cone :D and also to get teeth extracted while the pup is under for the spay. I take Zoe in mid-September. Thank you all in advance and appreciate your feedback! :) |
Just wanted to say good luck and bump this up. |
Thanks for this one, regan goes in two weeks (the 29th) for her spay & it appears they are also going to have to pull about five teeth so it's pretty scary. I'll be keeping up with this one. |
Neither of my girls needed or used a onsie or a cone/Eliz. collar. After the first day or so home, they acted like nothing had happened. It was a challenge to keep them down and quiet while they healed. Have crate/ex-pen ready and stocked with toys, treats, etc. |
I used the onesie for Layla only at night. I couldn't tell if she would bite at her stitches so just to be safe she wore them only at night. Layla was OUT of it for a good 3 days and needed help standing to go to the bathroom (she was quite pitiful :p ) Also when you go to lift her make sure you grab her bottom and hold it tight to her body. Layla did not come home with pain meds and didn't really seem to need them (i'm sure she WAS in pain but she really just slept for 3 days straight) but i didn't want to stretch her body and pull on the incision. Also even tho you are going to be SO sad to leave her there... don't let her see it.. be upbeat and she will be fine (cry in the car later!) I remember going to pick Layla up.. being a bit unprepared for how "out of it" she would be and she smelled like whatever they used to clean her belly.. not pleasant.. :( good luck and she will do fine :) |
How old are the dogs? I don't spay at less than a year. I had two of mine in at the same time, and one was 14 months and one 18 months. They had the deciduous teeth removed at the same time. One acted like nothing had happened the next day, the other was so sick for three days that she peed and pooped in her bed. She's fully crate-trained and never does that. She wouldn't even get out to eat or drink, and I had to take her food and water dishes to her bed. |
Gee guys thanks so much for the wonderful feedback so far. To jadecomputergal- Zoe will be 6 months- both my breeder and vet suggested getting spayed before the first heat-which is usually around that time. |

Good thread. Roxie goes in Wednesday for her spay. She was scheduled for June 1 st but came into heat 3 days before when she turned 8 months. I really wish I had gotten her done before her heat. It was hard on her and then she had a false pregnancy. She is now 10 1/2 months old. I had her preanesthesia bloodwork done and I bought her onsies today. Walmart had them on sale for 1.00 in premie and newborn sizes so I bought 2 of each. |
My Suzi will be 6 months old by the end of this week... I discussed with the vet about her being spayed, but, I need to wait until all of her teeth come in .I wanted to pull any baby teeth left at the same time. I'd just ask for very specific answers, and have it down in writing. :aimeeyork |
Thanks for all the info guys & thanks again to the OP! regan will be 11 months when she goes in for hers. I hope I'm not asking a silly question here but is it a good idea to get them groomed & shaved b/f their spay? I just have this deep down feeling she's prob gonna be a momma's baby & be pretty pitiful.... |

ok!! thanx!!! TGFYT!!! :) |
Abbey was spayed two days ago at 6 months old! We dropped her off at 9:00 a.m. and picked her up 4:30 p.m. She was still pretty groggy and slept most of the night into the following day. She really didn't eat or drink much which is expected. But by the evening, she was back to normal. You wouldn't even know that she had anything done! We pretty much have to keep an eye on her to slow her down. Her stitches are the kind that will dissolve....thank goodness! The vet just told us to make sure that she didn't lick them excessively. She also came home with pain medication which we only gave her once. So glad that it is over! |
If you don't mind me asking how much did the surgery cost with the dissolving stitches? I'm trying to gather all my info for when Nala has to get hers done. |
