Great info guys- thanks again- Zoe is slated to go in Sept. 11th. I took the 12th off to be with her so hopefully all goes well. |
My vet participates with Friends of the Animals so I went online and purchased a certificate and paid $90. This is Abbey's 5th day after surgery and she is doing great! We can't keep her down! She's doing amazing! Hopefully, your little girl will do great too! |
Great thread. I was wondering about all of this myself. My vet recommended spaying at about 6 mos...or at least before first heat and over 2 lbs. |
Zoey goes in tomorrow to be spayed...she'll be 13 months on the 27th. My vet wants her to stay the night, but they don't have anyone on staff during the night....so I don't think I'm going to let her stay. I'll sign whatever and bring her back in the morning, but I don't feel comfortable leaving her unattended. I love the idea of the onsie's..I'm going to Target or Walmart after I drop her off...shopping a great stress relief...thanks for all the great tips...love this web site. |
Abbey is exactly 6 months old and hasn't been in heat yet. That may be why she bounced back so fast. I'm so glad that she was able to come home in the evening. It is such a relief to have it over with. |
Does anyone mind saying how much they paid to get their girl spayed? My vet quoted me at $480 and I didn't know if that was way too high or normal? Thanks |
It cost $90 thru "Friends of the Animals" and I thought that was high! |
Wow that's cheap. I'm from Toronto, Canada so I'm not too sure if they have anything like that down here. Hopefully I can find something cheaper than what I was quoted. |
is it ever too late, my baby will be 3 in February? |

Cassie goes in on the 8th at a few days before 8 months old. I was told by my breeder that the little Yorkies almost never go into heat at 6 months, it is usually later, my friend whose pup was almost 10 months didn't and my older dog was 6 months when she was done. I waited longer for Cassie because of what the breeder said and just to get up the nerve. My quote was $150 for spay, $84 for pre op bloods, $65 for mandatory lyme test and it all came close to $300. or so. My old vet that i left because it was too expensive quoted $320. - $460 for just the spay, no bloods or anything included. Pre op blood was $112. |
If this is the first time she's had any type of procedure done, I would definately have pre-anesthesia testing done first. |
It cost about $200 or so for Ellie with blood work. Her vet does low cost spay/neuter, so that is very cheap compared to what we usually pay for things. Isoflurane anesthesia was used. Surgery is done on a heated surface. She was sent home with pain meds... It is too late to prevent mammary cancer at age 3 but not too late to prevent pyometra. Ellie was spayed at age 6. |
I am definitely getting the pre op bloods done. It's my first real look at Cassie's inner workings as well as good prevention. I do it before all Dezi's surgeries and also just for a check when surgery isn't pending if it's been a while. Everyone likes to tell me that because Dezi is only two and a half pounds, that she has liver issues so I like to reassure myself as well as tell the nay sayers that they are wrong. Cassie is more substantial, three pounds at 8 months. She is also more resilient than Dezi as she doesn't have the digestive sensitivity that Dezi does. I don't worry about Cassie as much. She's a tough one. But the surgery is going to scare me. |
Friends of the Animals My Vet is absolutely the best Vet around my area. I have been going to him for the last 20 years. I previously had some bad experiences with some others that I won't go into detail. My Vet participates in Friends of the Animals because he is passionate about affordable Vet Care. You should only go to someone that you totally trust. If they participate with Friends of the Animals, that's a plus. Please check out this site to see if your Vet participates: Friends of Animals | Spay and Neuter Certificate Information |
