Pregnant Yorkie Hello I have a 2 yr old yorkie that when she came in heat recently I took her back to the breeder I got her from. She linked up twice, once on Jan. 14th and once on Jan. 15th if she is pregnant she should be due around March 19th. I have gotten lots of advice from my breeder about the pups but was wondering if anyone else could give me tips on how to care for Penny during this time. puppies would be great but I especially want to keep Penny health and happy.

I am not a breeder, but I know you should probably go ahead and start feeding her puppy food so she's getting plenty of extra vitamins and calories. That's the only sound contribution I know of.

I'm not a breeder either, but have two new babies. I started feeding my mom to be cooked chicken, beef (which we raise) and venison along with the puppy food. I used Royal Canin puppy and just kept it out all the time for her. She got as much chicken/beef/venison as she wanted three times a day and believe me, the farther along she got, the more she scarfed up. Fed her a little buttermilk too. After she had her babies, she got so skinny, but the vet said that was to be expected and to keep her on the puppy food and give her whatever she wants. I give her Nutrical too.

If you want you could give her a tablespoon of Chicken Liver I know it sounds gross but it helps my Breeder feeds that with other stuff and ahe swears by that Chicken Liver. When you get it put a tablespoon in a little zip lock back a freeze and at night sit it out and let it thaw by that morning it will be ready, but dont give it to her everyday I say about once or twice a week. And you can also give it to the puppies if you have a very small one that needs to be bottle fed them blend it up and mix it up with the puppy milk. Hope this helps Kristi

My first reply Hello, I'm just figuring this forum out, I've never been active in one before, but I've observed this one many times. We bred our Yorkie Lily the end of November and believe she is pregnant, but the appetite has been a huge problem. She is due Jan. 29, I thought several weeks ago that her belly "popped" , but she just doesn't seem to be growing much more . I'll just hang in there, maybe she'll only have one . I have done so much research over the last few months...diet of puppy food starting at 5-6 weeks seems essential for solid protein and general nutrition (a lot of people add cottage cheese 1 tbsp per day and/or egg)...putting together a whelping area and introducing it early...slowing down rough housing and jumping (I'm finding jumping difficult)...and getting a whelping kit together for the birth--old news papers, towels, bottle/formula if needed, hot water bottle/heating pad, aspirator (if the mom doesn't lick/clean puppy after birth), and a good vet on call! Good Luck and Best Wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery!!
