Default Duke's getting neuter tomorrow

Hi everyone,

I've read the other threads on neutering but I'm still nervous about Duke's precedure tomorrow.
He's getting chipped as well, I'm just really nervous.
My sister and friend will drop him off since I have work in the morning but I will be leaving work early to pick him up.

Besides from my worries for his recovery, I was wondering if yours slept with you after the procedure?
I know he's not supposed to jump so I thought of gating him off where he can still see me while we sleep, but do not want him to think that I'm punishing him or anything by gating him off while he might still be in pain.

I dont mind having him on my bed but do not want him to jump up and down from my bed, even though it's a low platform bed, he likes to jump up and down all the times now.

Please let me know what your thoughts are....
Thank you

I understand the worry....Reggie was just neutered a month ago. He acted like NOTHING had happened. Not sleepy at all. However, he had the procedure done at 8 am and I didn't pick him up until 4:30...so perhaps he was done sleeping. I restricted his activity that evening, but Reggie has to be helped onto the couch and bed anyway. He doesn't jump...so that was a plus. Gave him a pain pill at 8 pm as directed and another in the morning...

The entire episode never phased him in the least.

Jack was neutered a week ago yesterday. He got laser surgery and microchipped at the same time. He was really sleepy the day he came home because of the anaestics (forgive my spelling). But the day after he was up running around and acted like nothing ever happened. They did send him home with three days worth of Metacam (which I would really recommend asking for). It's a pain medicine that lasts 24 hours. You just need to be very careful he does not lick. Jack was licking while he was in his Kennel or after we were asleep at night. He ended up hemmoraging. Don't worry, I made a bigger deal out of it than I needed to. Basically what happened was one his vessles was leaking and blood was pooling under his skin and it was swelling. I went in and got an e-collar and the swelling went down and the blood began to breakdown (just like a bruise) and is now only a few little spots here and there. It was an easy fix and his incision is healing very nicely (the vet said). I hope the best for Duke during his surgery. Everything will go well. The clinic even called me to tell me when he was done with surgery and what he was doing. It really calmed my fears.

Aww...poor Duke. I know you will be a nervous wreck tomorrow, but he'll be back to his normal self in no time. The last male I had neutered was pretty groggy afterwards. I would just monitor him closely to make sure he isn't licking...I'm sure he'll have on a collar to prevent that, but you'll have to take it off for him to eat and drink, so watch him closely.

Here's wishing him a speedy recovery.

So Duke's at the clinic now....and I'm at work worrying.
We tried the e-collar (we have a soft fabric one) on him last night but he fought to take it off, so we might need to get the plastic one and hopefully he'll let us keep it on.
I'm going to call them in a bit to see how things went......

Neither of my boys wore a collar...they never messed with their incisions.

Awww I know how it feels to worry about your baby boy on neuter day! I was worried SICK about Jamie but within 24 hours he wanted to get down and play but I did limit his activity for about 3 days just in case. He did sleep with me. We got him some baby onesies so that he didn't have to wear an ecollar, but he never even tried to lick the incision. The onsie were preemie sided and came 3 to a pack for like $3.

It's really okay to call and check every so often. I worried all day until we picked Gizmo up, and then the nurse was like...why didn't you call?

Gizmo slept with us, but I'm a light sleeper and he always has to be touching me when he sleeps (or sitting on my head ) so I knew when he moved or was starting to feel uncomfortable.

If you worry too much about it, I know someone who put down an air mattress in the living room and slept there with her pup, so that might work.

Since it's Friday, make sure they give you a pain pill and a number to call over the weekend. They tried to tell me I wouldn't need the pain pill, but we did. My husband had to run back up there and try to make it before they closed at six. And, if there are any questions over the weekend, you need to have someone to call.

Oh my god...I'm a nervous wreck.
We picked Duke up and ofcourse seeing him with the cone broke my heart.
He seems to be ok, just a little groggy but he wants to walk around and he wants to play catch.
I'm just having him walk around the apartment and not allowing him to run or jump.
Looks like he's hungry too and we can only feed him a little bit b/c of his size otherwise we should not feed him until the morning. It's breaking my heart but I know he's a trooper and will be just fine.
He's running around the apartment too much though so I might restrict him to a small area.

We got the pain med and the itch spray for when the hair grows back out....
I'm hoping that all things will be fine and he will be ok, just glad that I will spend the next 2 full days with him....

Thanks everyone for your comments and any suggestions will be appreciated.

I know how heartbreaking it is to see them uncomfortable but it is only for a little bit. When I got that e-collar they told me to keep in on until Saturday but he had it off by like thursday. He got the point he couldn't lick it and he hasn't tried since. I wish I would have thought of a onezie..... it would have been way cheaper. It's been like a week and half and Jack is amazing. I am glad to hear that Duke did just fine with surgery. Hope everything goes well.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad he's doing so well. Just give him lots of cuddles and gentle hugs.

Duke's doing well. He's eating and going #1 and #2 as normal. He tried to take the cone off and managed to get his mouth around it twice. I gave him his pain killer as the vet suggested. He seems just a bit less active. I had to check his area today to make sure everything's fine but seeing it made me feel horrible that I did that to him, esp when the vet said he had large family jewel But I know that it was a good decision for him in the long run.

I need to run to the store but feel bad leaving him alone. I hope if I do go that he'll be ok for an hour or so.

I'm sure he'll be fine. Just bring him back something good to eat!
