| Sarcoptic mange mites are terribly contagious, so if this were the case, yes - Diggy would more than likely have them also. Demodectic mange mites are not, (other than by being passed on from mother to puppy) - - it is something that is not preventable - not curable... but treatable..... so no - - no other animals in the house would carry the demodex mange simply because one dog has it. It's very easy to differentiate between the two different mites under the microscope.

| Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Bella was 3 june 6th. Diggy does itch here and there but always has, nothing major at all and never leaves marks or digs. Never loss hair or anything. He doesnt lick or go after on certain spot I think he just tends to get a lil itchy in the summer no big deal.

Here's what I found on demodex in older dogs... "Most demodicosis occurs in young dogs, under age one and a half. An older dog should not get demodicosis unless he or she has an underlying problem with the immune system. In such cases, demodicosis is considered a indication to seek a more serious hidden condition such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, or an immune-suppressive hormone imbalance. A more extensive medical work-up will be required." I would still have the vet do a skin scraping.... but since Bella is over 2 years old, it's at least a little less likely that it's demodex.... YAY!! ![]()

| Here's another thread about this... this baby's vets also thought allergies.... This is one of the reasons I feel that it's ALWAYS worth checking out with a skin scraping before anything else... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...tic-mange.html

If this was a mite would she find any relief in anything?? because this new antihistamine is giving her a lot of relief. Prednisone also gave a lot of relief when it was working but she was on 1 mg a day which a low dosage and i could tell it wore off in 12 hours or so. So as of right now no serious digging since we started the antihis. but she is SO very sad. I read that depression is a side affect and she seems just that. She still runs to the door screaming her head off when someone comes over...she still sits on the arm of the couch barking at every leaf that blows by, she still does her lil head tilt when i talk to her.....but then lays right back down she wont really play much. She will play when its food time tho. I have hardwood floors in my kitchen and her FAVORITE thing to do is have me sit with her food bowl and i take one piece of kibble at a time and slide it across the floor she chases it, pounces, kills it then eats it. She would do this until she explodes if I let her. I can defiantely tell a difference in her tho. She is a VERY playful girl and loves to kick her brothers butt at LEAST once and hour. she hasnt in 2 days! She also will NOT walk in the grass anymore??? Can dogs be that smart to actually KNOW what the are allergic to? Could she have just suddenly developed this bad of an allergy to grass? When she is having her itchy bouts she goes after the feet and butt. So obviously her feet bother her...so maybe she just finds the grass irritating touching her feet?

Or she may be allergic to grass (which I couldn't even imagine having to deal with). If not then we are back at the Italian dressing. Poor girl.

| I have two and Jewels didnt get it but Chachi had it bad. He had open wounds all over his back and no hair on his back. My Vet said all dogs have mites but when their immune systems get down they can multiply rapidly and thats when you have a problem
